This is how DH and I travel so much and cheaply. The best thing to do is find a US airport you can get to at a low cost and a European city that is in the area you'd like to go. So for DH and I, we picked Philly to fly out and land in Dublin. We were able to score flights to Philadelphia with points and plan to go to London for the Harry Potter show, so those flights are like $50 RT.
It's not a direct flight, but it's fun and you could possibly see multiple cities
I am again kicking myself for the fact that my miles are all on American, but United flies directly to where I need to travel this summer. Gah.
Where ya going?
Belgium, for a sorority sister's wedding. The wedding is outside Bruge. Wanna know who flies into Bruges? NOBODY. United flies direct to Brussels, but again, all my miles are on American. So I'll end up flying American into Paris and taking a train.
Have you flown Wow before? This is so, so tempting. I told DH we needed to go back to Oktoberfest while DD still flies free and this would be such a good deal.
I have! I liked them a lot. They're a budget line, so just be aware that you'll be paying for luggage. The planes were nice and service was great.

This would be great if we actually lived near any of these US cities.
That's why I said you have to find one that is cheap enough for you to fly to. I almost never fly directly out of Denver because the cost is so much higher. But I can get a cheap flight on frontier to places like NYC, so it's still cheaper than a regular flight.
I don't have to worry about 2 kids and their stuff, though.
Why did my DH have to be a TEACHER!? All the best deals are for during the school year.
I know My mom is also a teacher, so we always plan international travel with them around her breaks. Unfortunately, it's too pricey to go out during the summer, so we're always cold. lol.
I should not have looked at this. I really want to go to Portugal in September, but DH is insanely stressed at work and I don't think he'll go for it. (Yes, major first world problems.)

If you can't do it right now, make sure to follow the Points Guy on Twitter. The best deals are posted there immediately and don't always update right away on FB. We have an alert set up for his tweets.

Did you already buy? Are you using all points?
Not yet, I have a bunch of miles posting to my account in about two weeks so I'll buy then.

I'll use points to get TO Europe, whatever city I land in, then pay for the intra-europe flight.

Ah, okay.
What is currently annoying me is that there are far more super-cheap or really cheap INTRA-europe flights from like, everywhere other than Paris CDG. But if I don't land at CDG, I pay like, at least another $100 in taxes. WTF, airlines?

I hate that! London is the worst. We use our British Airways points on American or their other partners. It makes no sense to fly directly there, cost wise. Would transferring to Air Berlin points make sense? Fly into Dusseldorf or Berlin?

Ooh, I'll check that out!
Of all the cities in effing Belgium. BRUGES. BTW, Bruges airport is basically a cargo station. People don't actually land there. So no matter whether I fly into LHR, CDG or whereverthefuck, I'm getting on a train. #annoying.
I wish I could convert them to Iberia points. Flights between Barcelona and Brussels are cheap as eff.

We converted our BA points to Air Berlin and will be flying from NYC to Dusseldorf then Berlin to Chicago to come back. It was super low point usage.

I've never converted points before. How does one even do this?
