I have 1 dog, about 10lbs, he'll be 3 years old in November.
What do you do with your pet(s) if you're gone for 4 hours or less? We close the two bedroom doors and hide all of his rawhide (choking hazard). We make sure he's been walked within the last 1-2 hours. We give him a treat when we leave. We do sit, down, stay commands and "good boy" (so he can get the treat) when we are going out the door.
What do you do with your pet(s) when you leave for work? The same as 4 hours, except he gets his breakfast about 1 hour before we leave, and he's walked about 30 minutes before we leave. He's allowed to "free beast" around the apartment because he is not destructive (which is a pleasant surprise for a terrier mix). We keep a potty pad in the bathroom, but he never uses it anymore. He has amazing bladder control, and he doesn't even tinkle anymore when we first come back, and holds it until he's outside and on grass.
Where does your pet sleep at night? Next to his mama  , sometimes by H, but usually me ;D
Is your pet allowed on the furniture? Yes, we are very liberal with Conan's freedoms because he's our lil' baby boy  And we don't have super nice furniture.
When we used to leave, we used to keep him in a hallway (with toys, a crate, and a potty pad), behind a child-gate when we first got him (at 6 months old). But he learned to jump it (or climb it). He hasn't caused trouble so we've let him roam the apartment since he was about 2 years old.
What do you do with your pet(s) if you're gone for 4 hours or less? Make sure her food and water bowls are full. She has a doggy door so she lets herself out if she needs to go potty What do you do with your pet(s) when you leave for work? Same Where does your pet sleep at night? In her bed in the living room. If H is gone (which is rare), she sleeps in bed with me for the first half of the night. She gets kicked out and sent to her own bed when she gets restless. Is your pet allowed on the furniture?
Only supervised. She's had two seperate leg breaks/reconstructive surgeries from falling off the bed or couch.

What do you do with your pet(s) if you're gone for 4 hours or less? They have free roam of the house - minus the basement. We just lean a baby gate up in front of the basement stairs (one of the dogs had started going to the bathroom down there for some reason).
What do you do with your pet(s) when you leave for work? Same as above.
Where does your pet sleep at night? One dog sleeps on a dog bed on the floor in our room. The other sleeps on this big ottoman at the foot of our bed. Our cat sleeps next to me on the bed. If there are fireworks or a thunderstorm then the dogs end up in our bed. But two adults and 150lbs of dog don't really fit in a queen sized bed.
Is your pet allowed on the furniture? We have one chair that has become the dog chair (they like to sit and look out the window). They also occasionaly go on one of our couches. They technically aren't "allowed" but we don't fight it too much (and sometimes like to cuddle with them at night).
Well, we have a cat so they're a bit different, but I know you're asking for ideas about rules for your new pup! I'll answer for what we did with our dogs, but since my stepmom was ill and home most of the time, it usually didn't matter. We had a German Shepherd and a little dog at the same time. After the GS died, the little dog had a lot more anxiety being left alone (she'd dig at the door until she tore her poor paws and bled!) so she had to go everywhere. She was happier waiting in the car than at home.
What do you do with your pet(s) if you're gone for 4 hours or less? Cat - nothing. Big dog - nothing. Little dog in her old age usually came with as she got anxiety being home alone.
What do you do with your pet(s) when you leave for work? Cat - nothing. Dogs - same as above
Where does your pet sleep at night? Cat - anywhere he wants but in our bedroom. He's not really allowed in there except for supervised short periods due to H's allergies. Dogs - big dog had a blanket/bed in my parents' room on my Dad's side. The little dog was so teeny, she slept on/in the bed.
Is your pet allowed on the furniture?Cat - yes, everywhere except dining room table, kitchen counters. Big dog - no Little dog - yes, which I didn't think it was fair for them to be treated differently, but the little dog was smaller than our cats, so she was treated like a cat with her rules.
What do you do with your pet(s) if you're gone for 4 hours or less? link (dog) just sleeps in his crate. zelda (cat) just hangs out in the house.
What do you do with your pet(s) when you leave for work? same as above
Where does your pet sleep at night? link sleeps either in his crate or in our bed. zelda either runs around the house or sleeps in our bed or sleeps on the floor by our bed.
Is your pet allowed on the furniture? yes (except for tables/counters)
We have cats, I imagine the answers would be different for dogs:
What do you do with your pet(s) if you're gone for 4 hours or less? nothing, they roam around the house What do you do with your pet(s) when you leave for work? nothing, they roam around the house Where does your pet sleep at night? Ziggy usually uses her carrier as a bed or sleeps on the kitty condo. Major Tom used to sleep in a bathtub but now he just sleeps on the sofa in the TV room I think Is your pet allowed on the furniture? Not on the countertops, dining table, or dining chairs, but everything else is fair game

What do you do with your pet(s) if you're gone for 4 hours or less? We put Sadie Brown Girl in the bedroom with the door closed. Wherever the cats are is where they stay. What do you do with your pet(s) when you leave for work? I don't work, but when we are gone all day or for a long time, we put Sadie in the bedroom, make sure our indoor kitty is in there, too (her food and litterbox are in the master be bathroom area), and decide what we are doing with our indoor/outdoor cat (lock him in the bedroom if he is going to be inside, put fresh water outside if he's going to be outdoors). Where does your pet sleep at night? Sadie will sleep on the bed if one of us are gone. We just have a full size bed and she's a labrador. She will often come up on the bed, but is gone by the time we wake up. The kitties sleep wherever, but one of them sleeps by me most of the night. Is your pet allowed on the furniture? Yes. I allow them pretty much anywhere. James is more picky, but he's okay most places.
What do you do with your pet(s) if you're gone for 4 hours or less? We make sure they go outside. What do you do with your pet(s) when you leave for work? We make sure they go out and feed them breakfast. Where does your pet sleep at night? In our bed. Is your pet allowed on the furniture? Yes, but the dog cant jump on it by themselves, the cat is a cat and he does what he wants.
What do you do with your pet(s) if you're gone for 4 hours or less? crate the puppy, the big one wanders What do you do with your pet(s) when you leave for work? see above Where does your pet sleep at night? see above Is your pet allowed on the furniture? only when invited up, though the puppy doesn't have the hang of that yet.

What do you do with your pet(s) if you're gone for 4 hours or less? We usually put Abby outside, she does ok. I know it's blasphemy for some pet owners, but it's the only option we have for now. Indy (cat) just chills in the house. Probably making fun of Abby for having to be outside. What do you do with your pet(s) when you leave for work? When all of us are gone for a work day, I take her to doggy day camp at PetSmart. Indy chills inside. Where does your pet sleep at night? Abby sleeps on the floor next to the bed, Indy sleeps at the foot of the bed on my side. Is your pet allowed on the furniture? Not in the IL's house. When we were living by ourselves they were. Abby is allowed on the bed when it's just me and I've put a blanket down. Indy is allowed on the bed whenever.
What do you do with your pet(s) if you're gone for 4 hours or less? They hang out in the house, uncrated. They're 9 & 10 years old and pretty well behaved. What do you do with your pet(s) when you leave for work? DH works from home and is usually still asleep when I leave so I put them back in the bedroom with him. Where does your pet sleep at night? They sleep in our bedroom (don't want them roaming around all night mostly because I don't like hearing sounds from other parts of the house and being unsure if it's the dog or something else. Is your pet allowed on the furniture? Yes, but are pretty good about staying off of it when we want them to.
What do you do with your pet(s) if you're gone for 4 hours or less? We always crate them if we are gone for more than a half hour. They pee when they are bored.
What do you do with your pet(s) when you leave for work? Same as above.
Where does your pet sleep at night? We have a large crate in the sunroom that they share in the day and a smaller more cozy one they share in our bedroom at night. They voluntarily go into the cage to sleep. Sometimes have to fight to get them out of there.
Is your pet allowed on the furniture? Technically, yes. I'd prefer no personally, but they are daddy's girls so they get their way. We have leather blend furniture and use a spray to clean them regularly.
