I'm still reading In the Garden of Beasts. It's slow going and there are a lot of different characters that are hard to keep track of. Also my hold on The Girl With All The Gifts that just came in and I'm really excited to start it.
QOTW: I'm not a huge cake fan but I really like any cake with filling. I like a small amount of frosting. My favorite frosting is fondant. I realize this is really weird but I own it. 😀
I am between books. I just finished The Rosie Project and I am thinking about starting Eight Hundred Grapes today.
My favorite type of cake is a naked fruit cake. I am not usually one for cake because I don't like most frostings or fondants, but I absolutely love a good naked fruit cake.
I literally just finished Yes Please (Amy Poehler), reading before work ... good, but I think I liked Bossy Pants (Tina Fey) better. I'm not sure what I'll start next, as I have a few mysteries sitting on my nightstand. Nothing patriotic, though.
QOTW: Absolutely a frosting-delivery mechanism. I was a kid, my mom would often buy an angel food cake, with a big hole in the middle. Then she'd frost the whole thing, filling up the hold with frosting. (It would look like a normal cake until you cut into it.) It was years before I realized that most people didn't do that.
I'm finishing up Red Rising. It took me until about 70% to get into it, but I'm enjoying it now.
I'm listening to These Broken Stars and enjoying it at about halfway through. It's confusing because both books deal with interspace travel, and while their premises are totally different, I'm having a tough time keeping them strait.
QOTW: No, I really only like certain kinds of frosting. My favorite cake is my mom's mocha cake with mocha frosting (I will eat this frosting by the bucket) but really I mostly enjoy marble pound cake. No icing, frosting, powdered sugar. Just the pound cake. I love it.

I'm reading After You on my nook right now. I like it so far.
I'm listening to Deathly Hallows for my HP reread and also listening to Picnic in Provence for my book challenge read a food memoir category.
I like most cakes, especially with filling inside. I like a more creamier frosting and not one where I feel like I'm chewing sugar. My mother-in-law makes an awesome chocolate cake with chocolate frosting made with mayonnaise and it is surprisingly delicious.
I'm reading The Dog Stars by Peter Heller (thanks kelliebeans104 for recommending it!). It's written in an unusual style but it was not hard to get used to it. I'm hoping to have time to finish today.
QOTW: My sister makes a mocha walnut cake that is the best I've ever had. I like frosting but I prefer ito eat it with cake rather than alone. I generally like cupcakes better than cake.
I'm still reading Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson (and will be for a long time I imagine) and I'm listening to the audiobook for Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters (thanks for the recommendation aurora !). Both are very good.
QOTW: I could live off of tuxedo cheesecake from the cheesecake factory.

I loved this book!
I'm reading Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben.
I recently finished The Widow, which I found to be disappointing but an easy read and Lily and the Octopus, which was a really sweet book.
Reading America's Women: Drudges, Dolls, Helpmeets, and Heroines (may have the subtitle order wrong). I'm only 3% in but so far it's interesting.
I also just finished listening to HP and the Sorcerer's Stone (I've read the book many times but never heard the audio version. I have mixed feelings about the narration.)
QOTW: love cheesecake. Not a huge fan of most frosting but adore cream cheese frosting. Probably related.
I'm reading Winter Garden right now and am really enjoying it!! I'm having a hard time carving out time for it though. I'm so tired at night! Summer is exhausting, yo.
I don't really like frosting. I do like cake though!! But too much frosting ruins it.
I'm almost finished with In Full Bloom by Caroline Hwang. I should finish it up this weekend. It's ok, but I'm not loving it.
QOTW: Frosting is the only part of cake worth eating, IMO. We didn't even have cake at our wedding because I'm not a fan. We had brownies and blondies. It was awesome.
I just finished reading Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly. Set in WWII, it focuses on the experiences of women Polish political prisoners and specifically a group that underwent forced medical experimentation at Ravensbruck concentration camp. It's fiction based on real accounts. I thought it was a really good story and I appreciated that it was about a group other than Jewish prisoners (as a Jewish person, I'm more interested in the experience of prisoners of the Nazi regime who were not Jewish.)
As of today, I'm currently reading: The Oregon Trail by Rinker Buck - it's a travelogue of the author's experience retracing the route of the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon. Secrets of a Charmed Life by Susan Meissner - Another fictional account of Britons during WWII.
QOTW: What's your favorite kind of cake? And do you believe that cake is mostly a frosting delivery device? I would say that unless it has nuts in it (I'm looking at your carrot cake and Italian cream cake), it's my favorite kind of cake. I love butter cream frosting the best. Ugh! Now I want cake! LOL!
I finished Girl in Hyacinth Blue earlier this week, which follows the history of a maybe/maybe not Vermeer painting from it's current owner back through it's previous owners and all the way to it being painting and the girl in the painting, although it was really more like a bunch of related short stories rather than a novel. It was good and I enjoyed it, but I found the writing strange at times.
I'm currently reading Our Souls at Night, just less than half way through and I'm really loving it; it's kind of beautiful in a haunting/sad sort of way.
I'm actually not a big frosting fan, when we make cakes (which my H does fairly often - boxed Betty Crocker mixes) we never frost them and I prefer it that way. I do like cream cheese frosting though - that's a must for carrot cake, and it's good on graham crackers.
I'm reading The Jewel House: Elizabethan London and the Scientific Revolution by Deborah Harkness. It's non fiction and she's a tad repetitive so far but otherwise I like it.
As for cake, I love cheesecake and a good chocolate cake, but only, only, ONLY if it is homemade from scratch. No box mix crap. It tastes like preservatives and I'd rather eat no cake than that. And when it comes to frosting:
Seriously. That corner piece with the giant frosting rose on it? GIMMEE!!!!! I flippin' love frosting, esp. cream cheese frosting.

Winter Garden was so good. Did you read The Nightingale?

Yes and I loved it!! I have enjoyed most of Kristin Hannah's books. I think Firefly Lane was my favorite though.
spedrunner, I have had Winter Garden just sitting on my Kindle forever! I kind of forgot about it until you mentioned reading it and loving it last week. That inspired me to find it.

I am listening to American Gods
Reading The Raven Boys by Maggie Steifvater
QOTW: I have two favorites: German chocolate cake and rhubarb cake. Frosting is ok. I really am not a fan of buttercream. I prefer cream cheese based frostings.
I like cake and the fillings in them more than a ton of frosting, though good frosting perfects the cake. My favorite cake is white or yellow with a fruity cream filling or a creamy filling. Any cake will work when I have ice cream to mix it up with, I love the texture.
