I would think it's a fine test if you want to spend the money. Like a previous poster, I also just gave up. Never found anything that didn't cause issues, but I don't think I ever tried platinum.
I would be kinda worried that those aren't FULLLY platinum plated, like maybe only the parts showing are plated? I would guess that the earring back isn't plated either.
I would probably give up if platinum was my only option too, because that is an expensive habit to get into, lol. I don't blame you for trying, though. $20 isn't too much of an investment to try it out. If it doesn't work though, I wouldn't necessarily blame it on platinum.
If the backs bother you, have you tried just using rubber stoppers? That's what I use on studs and have no issue. I would maybe try the platinum played earring with those because I'd guess the backs are not platinum played.
Since having a kid earrings are a no go. Not even my platinum ones I wore ever day. I just gave it up. And I have to keep my white gold engagement set constantly dipped or I start having a reaction. It sucks. I haven't worn earrings in almost 3 years.

I've definitely noticed it's gotten worse! I used to be able to manage a few hours/most of an evening and now it's like an hour or two tops.
Rings have never bothered me though. My wedding set was white gold and never had any issues.
Someone told me to try the clear fingernail polish trick. I haven't tried yet.
The only thing I can wear is stainless steel. I've tried everything, and when I went to get my nose pierced that's what he recommended. It sucks because not to many cute earrings come in SS.

It's not just the backs -- it's any part that touches my ear really -- but mostly the post inside the hole.
This is me. I can't wear earrings anymore. I had a pair of super nice platinum and diamond studs my grandparents gave me for a special occasion. I can't even do those. I get mini infections in the hole and it's disgusting. I just gave up. It wasn't worth it.
I haven't worn earring since I was 18 for this same reason. Anytime I did they became infected so bad that the earring would end up INSIDE my ear if I left them in overnight.
I developed a metal sensitivity once I hit about 40. My doctor wonders if I have developed it as the result of walking around with a shard of crystal in my foot for 6 years before it abscessed; the timing of onset fits. It's sort of like Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Disorder and thought to be potentially an autoimmune issue. I do have other autoimmune stuff.
I can't do surgical steel or most golds- at all. Properly cleaned, I can do 18K yellow gold, platinum or sterling for short periods of time- like out to dinner. I do best with silver and with wires rather than posts. I would be very careful around any ointment that contains Neomycin as it is a common allergen. I can tolerate Polymicin for cuts, but not with earrings.
It's frustrating because I own a lot of really nice earrings.
I can wear surgical steel (like for pin's in the bone), that is it. I have platinum diamond studs that I can tolerate for a few hours for special occasions. My wedding ring is platinum and has not given me any grief, but it is not "in" my skins. I used to only have issues with "gold & silver", but have had issues with everything as I get older.
I was going to ask the same. There are a lot of them on amazon/ebay, and they are cheap enough to try it out with low $$ risk. When I googled this awhile ago, titanium came up as a good choice for many with metal allergies.
I've had metal allergies since childhood and let my earring holes grow over when I went to college because I couldn't wear anything anymore.
Got them re-pierced at 29 to try again and didn't have the same problems. Have to wear 18k gold and no costume jewellery, nothing with nickel.
I did have a massive flare up after DS3 and any earrings irritated my skin and I had a weeping infection within 24 hrs. It suuucked because I thought those days were done. Once I weaned DS3 - about 8 months ago - I tried to wear earrings again and I seem to be fine.
I did paint clear nail polish on earring posts of costume jewellery in my teens. It worked a bit - basically the inflammation came on slower.
