So we are on day 1 of no diapers and I already want to give up. DS is 2.5, was showing many signs of readiness several weeks ago but then kind of lost interest in the potty altogether once the novelty wore off. We decided to just try pulling the diapers because I am starting to get super nervous about our September deadline (for preschool).
He had at least 5 or 6 accidents - I lost count - and they didn't seem to bother him. Usually we would see him doing it or DD would tell us but he would just go on playing in the wet underwear. DH wanted to go out to dinner so I threw on a diaper over his underwear so it would be more uncomfortable/non absorbent when he peed. When we got home I checked and he was wet and never said anything. Are these all bad signs that he is not ready or do I just need to stick with it? How many accidents are normal for day 1 and how often did you make them try?
I feel like a FTM because we never went through this with DD! With her, it was a pretty easy slow progression. At this age or younger she started keeping her diaper dry in between changes so we just put her in underwear and it went pretty smoothly from there. Of course, she still had accidents here and there but never so many in one day and never without even acknowledging it and seeming somewhat unhappy about it.
What are you doing to PT? Are you taking him to the potty at regular intervals or just hoping he'll go when he needs to? Was he in underwear having accidents?
If he doesn't care that he's peed and isn't telling you then that might mean he's just not ready yet.
We put him in just underwear and a t-shirt once he woke up this morning and were attempting to take him at intervals (but I think our intervals may have been too long). We put the potty in the corner of the family room so it would be right there. When he did pee in his underwear, we would remind him that pee goes in the potty and have him sit and see if there was any more pee left. If he went in the potty at all (even a dribble post accident), he got an M&M. That happened maybe 3 times.

I would do naked from the waist down.
When I pted ds1 he only had one success on day 1. Then on day 2 he was fine. Keep it up!

Yeah I wanted to give up on day one with my DS who was the same age. Probably had 8-10 accidents. The next day 1-2 and the third day none. I would keep at it.
I would give it another day or 2. It didn't click for Ds until the very end of day 1 - day 2. If he hasn't made any progress then I would wait a few more weeks and try again.
Update: Thanks to everyone for the tips and encouragement to keep going!
On Sunday, we left him naked from the waist down and took him at 5-20 minute intervals as @vicmo suggested depending on how long it had been since he last went. We had no accidents and 2 or 3 times he initiated it himself either by just going while I was out of the room or telling me he had to go!!!
It was such a difference from Day 1 but part of it is that I realized I needed to be much more vigilant if I wanted to prevent accidents. Today he is at daycare so he can't be bare bottomed and it will be impossible for them to follow him around as much as I did but hopefully enough clicked yesterday that it won't be a total disaster.
