I hate-- HATE-- movies that are filmed almost entirely in the dark. I'm watching Room. I get that it's a room, a small, dark room. But I can't fucking see anything, and it's frustrating.
I always rant about the volume. I hate that the music/sound effects are on blast, but the talking isn't loud. I have to turn the volume way up, and about have a heart attack when the sound effects come on

Yes! Or in general with fluctuation in volume, not necessarily just effects. Like OITNB, the intro song is like 9 billion times louder than the rest of the show. Drives me BANANAS.

Certain TV shows we can only watch when the sun goes down. Like GOT, the lighting is very dramatic but can be quite dark/dim. It's better to watch in the evening.
I'm in my vacant classroom "working" while DS is in camp, and I'm watching it on my Apple TV. I've turned up the brightness as far as it can go, elleblue. Still dark, but now my actual computer screen is blinding me. I can't win.

Bummer. Maybe fiddle with the contrast? Don't blind yourself though!
I've noticed. A lot of TV shows and movies are so dark, you can't watch them during the day. I usually adjust the "themes" on TV to something lighter. This is beyond annoying!

see if there is a compression mode in your tv's audio controls, a voice enhancer mode, or just make sure it's not on a theatrical mode (which is meant to be used with surround sound). might not fix the issue but could help.

I really dislike the disparity between the volume of dialogue and music/special effects. Watching Last of the Mohicans is so difficult because I always have to turn up the volume to hear what everyone's saying, but turn it down quickly during battle scenes.

This is me. I have to stand directly in front of the t.v. to watch GOT in the summer. I don't have blinds for my kitchen window so it was hard to see even with the curtains drawn in my living room.

Whenever we start a show or movie my h just tosses me the sound remote. I cannot deal. Have to turn it up and down constantly.
I've given up on movies because they were too dark or because of the volume changes. You'd think they want us to see and hear what's happening in the bloody thing!
