I'm not sure how old he is but my kids loved Diary of a wimpy kid books and books by Tom Gates. They are the only books they have repeatedly read from 2nd until 5th grade.
This is the first book in a cute series about a girl who works as a food critic for the New York Times (or some fake paper based on the Times): All Four Stars
I think all three books are out now, but I've only read the first two.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Captain Underpants, but I'd check with his parents first as he may already have them.
ETA - don't get Hatchet. Reading level is likely too high for 7 and IMO the subject matter is too intense for a non-parent to buy a kid.
DS read Hatchet in 4th. Loved it. There's something about that book that appeals to kids on spectrum. There have been a couple of instances over the years where a kid with Aspergers has eloped in a bid to replicate the experience. Not sure if that applies here, swizz, but I would avoid it if that is an issue.
I hate Captain Underpants, personally. If he's the kind of kid who runs to potty talk, I would avoid. They can be great for reluctant readers.
If he's a strong reader for his age, we liked Holes, Hoot, Frindle, Because of Winn Dixie, Maniac Magee. If he's not, the magic Treehouse Books are easier. If you're traveling, finding one about where you are visiting might appeal.
This is an interesting list, but he's probably not ready yet-
He's already reading books above level then. I'd look at Dragon in the Sock Drawer, How to Train Your Dragon, books from the I Survived series, and/or Sideways Stories from Wayside School.
