I wear wedding band on the inside because I take off my engagement ring at night to avoid getting scratched or losing the stone. Mine isn't technically a "set," though - both rings were bought separately, so I don't know if there's something at play here about which I'm unaware.

I've also heard the "closer to heart" thing, but it just makes sense overall to me, as I never remove my wedding band.

When I wore both, I had the wedding band on the inside because it was larger than my engagement ring. Then my fingers got fat and I only wear my band now.

I prefer my engagement ring on the inside because it's easier to take them off that way. This isn't why I do it, but there's an alternative saying that the engagement ring is a promise, and the wedding band seals the promise to your heart.
