We had one. I don't think I actually really looked at my toilet before i ordered so they're either pretty universal or i got lucky
That said, DS1 never used it. We trained on a potty ring (he wanted something with handles) and after he went to school he got comfortable using a regular toilet seat (which has been very helpful for when he needs to go while we are out).

We have one. Yes, you just need to know if your toilet has an elongated bowl. I love it. We started potty training with the insert piece, and I hated it. It sat on the bathroom floor when we weren't using it and skeeved me out. We bought one that is Church brand from Home Depot, and the toddler seat can be taken out when we are done with it.
We needed to replace ours, so we got the one with the built-in child seat for eventual potty training. Replacing was easy (as easy as replacing a regular toilet seat). Lowes had one round and one elongated. I think HD is the same. Brands might be slightly different, but yes, they are fairly universal.
C doesn't use it yet, he likes to sit on his little potty, and we're not really PTing yet , but I'm sure we'll get use out of it as he gets a little bigger.
We have one and it has worked really well for my daughter. No splash guard, so you would have to be careful w/a boy, but she likes peeing on the big potty, and I like not having another thing to clean shit out of.
Yes, we have them in my son's bathroom and our half bath downstairs and I love them. We started out with rings and if grossed me out. Plus I hated how much they moved around. My husband installed them and I think they were fairly easy.
Yes, it's universal as previously mentioned. We have one in our small bathroom and it was so great to get rid of the tiny potty seat when there wasn't really room for it. It also unclipped easily for cleaning which is a nice feature.

We have this one and love it. I imagine we will use the small seat for a long time.
Mine stopped after a few months. We didn't have the built in kind though (just the kind that hung off a hook on the tank). She never needed a ring for public toilets either.
I didn't get one because I wasn't sure how a boy would do with one. It is really easy to change out seats. I like the easy clean ones that will close themselves.
My older two used them for maybe a few months? DS3 never used one. He just went straight to sitting on the big potty to poop and standing to pee when he trained at 3.
DD used them for <2 weeks. She likes sitting on the regular toilet with nothing special to help her. Works for me and makes using the toilet while out and about easy too!
We have one. I ended up installing it myself and it was pretty easy. All you need to know is the shape of your bowl. We had a ring for a while but (and maybe this was just ours) but it would somehow trap pee on the underside so if she peed and we didn't know she had gone so we could clean it out it would start to stink. DD can sit on a normal seat just fine if we put her on it, but she isn't able to climb up the steps, turn around, and balance herself without us just yet so this was a good investment.

We got a long one for downstairs and a short one for upstairs. Both fit. I don't know anything else about my toilets.
Unfortunately, DD doesn't like them. At least not yet. The NextStep ones we got have the silent close feature though, which we like and didn't have before, so it's not a complete waste.

Am I the only one with no clue what you guys are talking about when you talk about sitting backwards on the potty? I mean, why? I've never heard of this before.

That's the only way L will go. He climbs up on the stool (so he's already backwards), scoots on to the seat and holds on to the tank for balance. It works for him but I hate that we have to take his pants, underwear, and shoes right off for him to go.
