H and I were having this discussion recently. I convinced him to order regular chino shorts from J Crew to replace *just one pair* of his blessed cargo shorts and he can't handle it.
He agrees they look nicer but he thinks they are "fancy" and feels conspicuously dressed up. He's all "what do I wear with these? What shirt, what shoes?" H, literally exactly what you wear with cargo shorts. T shirt, polo, tennis shoes, flip flops. Any t shirt will do. It is blowing his mind.
I slowly got DH to get rid of his cargos in his mid 20's and now he happily has none. His JCrew chino shorts are his go-to now. It was a process but worth it, lolol.

There is hope! We also struggled for a while with flat front vs pleated dress pants and I finally won that battle.
I am JEAL of the successful cargo-extermination, but I agree with @spunkerella in appreciating there's Hope! ETA: H's response to hearing about the article, our responses, my hope..? "F those bitches! ... Just kiddin'.... Sorta.... Hope guys, hope
My husband still questions me about why he is not "allowed" to wear jorts anymore. Oddly enough, he has replaced his old cargo shorts with plain khaki shorts all on his own.
Lol. I sent the original WSJ article to my H today and he got all defensive. "I only have ONE pair now and I only wear them when I don't give a shit!" I know honey, I'm proud of you.
I'm so glad I infiltrated his wardrobe two months into the relationship, when he was 21. So much of this shit, including cargo shorts, cargo jorts, jorts, zip up khaki camping pant/shorts, socks with sandals, Tevas, and showing up for flights in swim trunks, got shut down permanently.
I have managed to get rid of my husband's cargo trousers over the years but not, alas, his cargo shorts. Admittedly shorts are a very casual item of clothing, so my usual arguments fall ...short.
My H and boys wear khaki cargo shorts. I don't care. It's better than the shiny athletic shorts he would prefer to wear 24/7. (Though he still wears those FAR more often than I'd prefer!) My H has almost no fashion sense...which was already a running joke before I met him. We joke that it just makes me look more fashionable (which I am not, but I at least sort of try).
One reason I really don't mind buying him cargo shorts is that he's 6'6". Cargo shorts are typically longer. I prefer cargo shorts over shorty shorts on him. (When you're as tall/big as he is with long legs, it doesn't take much before shorts start looking ridiculously short!)
ETA: I did, however, strongly encourage him to part ways with his cargo khaki CAPRIS that he owned back in 2004! We still laugh about those!
Carharts. My H will only wear Carharts. God help us. WHYYYYY do his pants need the little strap thing for a hamer? He works in an office! He doesn't even know where the god damn hammer is!
I'm pretty sure I would have to pry DH's cargo shorts from his cold dead hands. And frankly I really don't care if he wears them or not. Half the time I'm just trying to get him to wear a shirt with a collar vs a t-shirt. The bottom half is secondary.
He does have a pair of navy blue regular shorts and he says they're too tight everytime he wears them. They're not, but they're not his normal loose cargo shorts.

I think cargo shorts would be a step up for dh. He insists on wearing Adidas shorts with those tech dry shirts and never matches. At least with cargo shorts he would match.

My H doesn't wear cargo shorts and he never has. His legs are short, so he needs something he can hem if necessary. The pockets on cargo shorts just don't lend themselves to hemming.
If he did wear them, however, I may cringe a bit inside but it's his body and his choice.
@bunnybean I love your passion for this subject lol.
I'm confident that my H had never in his life owned cargo shorts. But he does own a pair of shorts with a pocket for holding a beer can. They are also short enough that his boxers peek out a bit sometimes.
