34w yesterday and spent 2 hrs in l&d for monitoring due to random period like cramping and some spotting when I wiped.
Monitor picked up contractions but I was not feeling these at all. They ran tests, checked cervix, and nothing so they sent me home.
Doctor did warn me that at 34w labor would not be stopped. So, if he were to come early what does it look like for NICU time etc? At what point will we likely avoid NICU time?
And now I am freaking out at how unprepared we are...looks like I need to do some laundry, install car seat bases, make freezer meals, and make sure things are ready for C. I was planning on starting this around 36 weeks since C was induced with no signs of labor at 41w.
34 week babies can do pretty well. Minimal or no oxygen support, minimal feeding support. I think about a week or two NICU stay, barring no complications. One more week gestation, and your baby would have 50/50 chance of coming to my well baby nursery. MrsAggie will have more info on expected NICU course.

Have you had any steroids?
Thank You! There was mention of a steroid shot but none was given. I am assuming because I was not dilated at all that she felt ok not doing that but I am not sure.
Did they do a fetal fibronectin test? (Swab your cervix with a long q-tip)
At 34 weeks babies are able to attempt bottle feeding but they typically need a feeding tube until about 36 weeks. Every once in awhile there's a baby that can shoot out of there at 35 weeks but 36 is more common. It's very baby-dependent on if baby will need respiratory support but in the majority of cases no oxygen will be needed. The more days baby stays in, the better it will be at eating and breathing and will come home faster. At 35 weeks, we do allow the potential of being a normal well-baby in mom's room. If baby is born before 37 weeks there will be blood sugar checks and a car seat challenge before you go home (so you'll need your car seat/base before discharge). All in all, 34 weeks is considered the ideal gestation to make it to for preterm labor. I hope baby stays put!

Thank You! They did a swab test but I thought it was the Group B test, not sure.
I am installing the car seat bases today so we will at least have that ready to go. I really think he will stay put forever but after yesterday I guess it's time to start preparing just in case. So, if I can keep him in til 36- 37w then I have a good chance at BFing and going home within a decent time?
luv2rn4fun Statistically speaking, yes. Most babies at that gestation will nurse and go home on time with mom. I hate to say anything concrete because there's always that rogue baby that tries to make a liar out of me

Thank you ladies! Baby boy has strict instructions to stay put a few more weeks...doesn't he know the FB announcement said Sept 2016!?!
Good news is I was able to wash all the newborn and 3 month clothes along with all the baby gear and set up the infant car seat in my car (DH's base will be installed tonight when he gets home). So we are much closer to being prepared in case he does decide to come early, which I am confident he will stay put a little while longer (maybe a false sense of security but I had these contractions with C starting by 36 weeks and they did nothing to start labor).
