My friend is moving to Michigan for work in 2 weeks (she was in Oil & Gas down here in Houston and got laid off - no Houston companies responded to her resume). She is moving up there and planning to stay at one of those extended stay hotels until she finds a place. I offered to ask for opinions here
Her job will be in Hartland which she says is between Lansing & Detroit. She would need a 2 bedroom/2 bath (she has a 20 year old son living with her) and max rent around $1100.
Any areas that you can recommend she look or areas to avoid?
That's the area I grew up in and now I live north of there. If she's working in Hartland I'd actually recommend that she look a bit north for better housing rates. My house in Genesee county would cost 3 times the amount in Livingston county. Straight shot up US 23 about 20 minutes will make a huge difference in pricing.
Why? I have never lived there (live about 30 minutes from there) and really only know about it because of the outlet mall so I am genuinely curious.
Howell was the epicenter of a lot of KKK activity in Michigan for a long time. People there will tell you that it's "not like that anymore", but it certainly is. My sister lives in Howell and I've spent plenty of time there. It's a bit scary.

We are planning to move to Michigan in the spring and are considering brighton. I need to spend more time there before we make a decision but on the surface it looks nice.
Whitmore Lake is nice too, but the commute up and down 23 can be a bit busy (although she'd be heading away from Ann Arbor in the morning so that would help).
Pinckney is nice, but would require some side roads to get out to the highway. Holly is nice too.
Also ditto PPs to avoid Howell.
In general, I'd live closer to Detroit/Ann Arbor than Lansing. The closer you get to Lansing, the more rural it gets and there would be less cultural stuff to do. Schools are going to be good anywhere; Michigan is known for good schools.
Brighton is beautiful, as is Milford (where I grew up) but Milford is super pricey IMO. If I were to move back, I would probably try to live in Brighton.
