I liked the LLBean Jr. Size for preschool and kinder.
I second this. They also have their original on sale right now for the same price. It's not so much bigger that it will overwhelm them but bigger enough that you'll get more use out of it. The Jr ones really only hold a lunch and a folder and not much else.
My very small DS1 used the Lands End Classmate Small last year and it worked great. It was still a little big on him but that just means he can use it again this year in 1st grade! It holds a lot of stuff. He could easily use it the next couple of years without a problem.
All three of mine (1st grade, preK, preschool) are using the Ll bean jr. DD is on year 3 and it still looks new.
This, I think we're even getting 2nd grade out of them unless it ends up too small. It's the perfect bag the first few years and great for road trips/carryons.SaveSave

If you want one with bottle pockets, the L.L.Bean Explorer backpack is another good choice. If I were choosing between the Original and the Junior backpack, I would pick the Original. It'll look a bit big for a kindergartener, but if you don't cram it full of books they should be able to carry it ok and they'll grow into it.
Garnet Hill and Hanna Anderssen (sp?) both carry backpacks in different sizes. DD's new one going into 3rd grade is from Garnet Hill. I can't remember if the one she used in K & 1st was from GH or HA, before she decided pink was no longer her favorite color. Last year's was one I had used in France for day trips with her as a 4 & 5-yo.
I bought a regular sized North Face one for DS1 before summer camp started and he uses that now. I got a Land's End Small backpack for DS2 since he needed one that can fit a folder for preschool.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one buying an adult backpack for a barely 5yo!

Joining the adult backpack club! I got DD1 a PBTeen back in the regular size for kindergarten. Should last us a really long time.

Okay, so I went with the LL Bean suggestions. How accurate is their shipping/delivery estimate? It says it will arrive by August 26, but that seems super quick considering I am having it embroidered.

Their shipping estimates are usually spot on. I ordered dd1 a jacket at 4pm yesterday and I have tracking information with set delivery for the 24th.

We got one from The Children's Place a couple years ago that is blue and green. It was too big at the time so I put it up in a closet. I offered to get DS a new one but he wanted to use this one. Target and the like has solid colored backpacks for older kids, like jansport brand or whatever that aren't really big. Consensus from people I know was to get the full size PBK even though it looks big on a kindergartner, and they can wear it ok. The next size down will fit a folder but might be too small next year.

Perfect! I am a little worried because I haven't gotten an email confirmation of the order though.
