All I am hearing today is how disappointed people were with the re-run Obama speech. (It looks like a re-run of a Carter speech from 30 years ago) and the lack of any new proposals, ideas - just keep doing what we are doing and expect different results. Pure insanity IMO.

Except that his numbers are up, so clearly not everyone was disappointed.
That aside, a post convention bump is pretty normal, right?

Kind of like cutting taxes to "stimulate the economy" right?
I heard over 25 million watched Clinton's speech. He sold Obama and the Democrats like nobody else. I'm sure a big portion of the bounce is because of Clinton.
Lys, the fact is, plenty of people out there who haven't been 100% satisfied with Obama were unimpressed with the RNC and had their spirits renewed by the DNC. I count myself among those people. It wasn't Obama's best speech ever, but Elizabeth Warren, Julian Castro, Michele Obama, Deval Patrick, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden totally rocked it and made me proud to be a democrat. THAT is why you are seeing increased approval ratings; that is why I do think that Obama will get a bounce despite job numbers (especially since overall UE is down - and regardless of the 'yeah buts' about it) - and I will bet that bounce is bigger than Romney's.
I know it just kills you to admit it - I know it just drives you bonkers - but the DNC crushed the RNC in terms of generating enthusiasm, and that goes a long way toward increasing approval ratings.

Extremely well said.
The best part of the convention for me was hearing so many people stay positive. There was a lot of talk of Obama's accomplishments, and framed in ways that many people probably had not heard about or had forgotten about. I think the biggest problem Obama has had up until the convention was a perception that he hasn't done anything since he got into office, except pass health insurance reform. The convention changed that. Sure, there's room for discussion over whether he could have done more things or whether he could have done some things better, differently, or faster. But the greatest myth - that he's done nothing since getting into office - was completely shattered. That's why his approval rating has gone up, and why I don't think the jobs report will hurt him that much.
If anything, I think the jobs report could hurt the Republicans more. I felt like so much of the RNC wasn't focused on jobs, but complaining about welfare and entitlements, basically insinuating that there's these hoards of unwashed masses suckling at the government teat and stealing money from hard working Real Americans. When faced with the prospect of a slow economic recovery, the R's rhetoric isn't very comforting. Obama may not have been able to get you a new job yet, but at least he isn't taking a giant dump on you because applied food stamps to feed your family.

Isn't that the Romney program? Just keep doing what Bush was doing, and expect different results this time?

He tied honey boo boo. Did you see this? I swear this country is screwed!

es, although Romney didn't really get one. Two points, I think?

I don't disagree that the dems did better, but the UE is down because fewer are working, looking for work in,what, 39 years. THAT is MAJORLY depressing, IMO. I think that will hamper and may be the rs (somewhat, though not sure they will win) saving note here,
Oh believe me, it's not like I'm celebrating the UE rate. It's just that honestly I think most people won't bother to educate themselves as to why it's gone down. That superficial - even misleading - number could still be a positive with a large swath of the electorate.

Maybe, though I have heard all over about it being people dropping out, followed by the Dow affected. I understand your thought though, for sure
Clinton gave a good speech (however drew a good comparison between Obama & Clinton's economic success), Michelle gave a good speech, (but we are not voting on how great of a husband and father Obama is), Biden gave a speech I did not think he was capable of --- but he is not running for president. People will vote their pocket books.

Doubt that all Romney's supporters will get the tax break that he's planning on giving the top 1%. Most of his supporters will be negatively affected by his tax cuts. So, no. People don't always vote with their pocket books.

Michelle's speech wasn't about how good of a father and husband Obama is. That was Ann's speech. You should try listening to Michelle's speech.
If people vote with their pocket books, they should vote for the party that has their pocket books in mind and that party is NOT republicans who are responsible for the economic policies that caused this mess, responsible for the feeling of shame that people stricken by this mess feel, and responsible for the utter and complete gridlock that has resulted in its aftermath.
except for calling glass steagall "no longer relevant". That was not and R. It was Clinton (the act that many, even Warren, call a crucial cause to the meltdown). But, okay, I guess the dems are the better option.I mean, I guess since they didn't author the bill...
On the tie with Honey Boo Boo, can someone explain?
This article says that they tied but it also says HBB had 2.4 million viewers and Clinton had 20.6 million. So I'm not really sure why people think they tied...? What am I missing?

Lys, all your post demonstrates for me is that the RNC preached to their base and it was uninspired and the same old. The DNC worked to lay out facts (please watch Clinton's speech which was fact checked to be accurate) and managed to swing some of the moderates, hence the 7 point bump. I do understand how hard it is to see that when Fox consistently tells you otherwise.

The tie was comparing HBB to the ratings of only one channel showing the DNC. Same for the RNC last week. But of course the conventions were aired on multiple channels, so many more people saw the DNC and RNC. The tie thing has been really overblown IMO.
