This morning I found several plastic cards (not credit cards) and business cards strewn on the sidewalk in front of my house. I suspect a wallet had been stolen and the unnecessary stuff was tossed by the thief. One of the business cards had a small Post-It note on top with what I think may be a SSN.
My question is: should I contact the police and ask for identity theft department? Or should I just let it go? I'm fairly certain this individual has already reported their wallet/purse as being stolen.

I just asked a cop friend of mine who suggested I contact the person and give them the cards back if I'm comfortable doing so. If not, he suggested I safely destroy the items. I'm going with option #2. If it was credit cards, though, I'd be right on it.

Nope. If they aren't identifying, I would shred whatever you think is PII. Kroger cards can be dropped in a mail box and it will make it back to the company then owner of card (if this is the type of cards you're thinking). If they don't have names on them then I would destroy and not bother the police with it.
