I didn't realize who he was when I initially posted, I apologize if I offended anyone. I thought something seemed off but thought (apparently incorrectly) that PBS would be a reputable source.
:: sigh:: Fucking Charles Murray, man! I wish they'd make him recant his "research", and make him publically admit he gladly accepted research dollars from well known white supremacy groups. Yet sadly, he's still cited and considered a pillar of present day social sciences. Please see below for some of the many reasons he's vile as fuck! www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/charles-murray
Statistically speaking, Murray's not even a good research scientist. His research methods are questionable and sloppy. He's right on par with the 9 out 10 dentists who prefer Crest, because Proctor and Gamble pays big bucks to support the scientific findings they want to attain.
But what do I know. Apparently, I came in with a bubble score of 18. I'm a first generation ethnic" child of dark non- Eurpoean immigrants, who usually must avoid white blue collar areas, as they're neither safe nor welcoming for those who are truly "Un-American" like me. Charles Murrary can go fuck himself.
This definitely explains why my score didn't feel right. Because there is no way in hell I think I should have a score higher than you. It's incredibly clear just based on that how flawed (and gross) his work is.
Hey, you know how people said they want to do better on issues relating to race? Try recognizing all the essentially racist assumptions - that some mythical white culture is the default American culture - instead of just posting your score.
ETA: Especially on PAGE THREE after this has already been addressed.
I noticed as I took it but wanted to take the quiz before I read and delved deeper. I apologize.

I grew up middle class in a small working class town, and have lived in poverty as an adult, which is where all of my points that make Charles Murray say I'm not an elitist come from. But I absolutely grew up in a bubble, it was just a white, middle America bubble.
The idea that there's some sort of "real American experience" that involves Branson Missouri and NASCAR is incredibly frustrating, but par for the course for Murray. It's not even true, demographically. Many more people live in urban areas than rural areas. Working class whites (the definition of non-bubble here) are easily outnumbered by the non-whites whose experiences are left out of this quiz.

Also, I don't see much point in getting into the finer points of why this quiz is trash, but awarding "points" for having lived below the poverty level not by choice is just...not the same as driving a pickup truck.

Really? There's no point in discussing why this quiz is trash?
I think that's the only important point being made here at all.

I mean it doesn't need a point by point breakdown as trash, since the whole thing is trash.
I am so annoyed that my phone keeps leaving out parts of my responses. What I had wanted to say when I initially posted was that this quiz was bullshit. I may have gotten a high score but that doesn't mean I don't live in a bubble. Quite the opposite. I grew up in an ignorant bubble in the middle of no where. That's nothing to be proud of.
I wasn't familiar with him before this "quiz." I started to look up more about him, and of course, Wikipedia was the first hit. Here's their synopsis of his book: "He is best known for his controversial book The Bell Curve, written with Richard Herrnstein in 1994, that intelligence is a better predictor of many factors including financial income, job performance, unwed pregnancy, and crime than one's parents' socio-economic status or education level." Ridiculous. I can't imagine the number crunching and selective samples he has to find in order to draw those conclusions. I know they say that research can prove anything, but this is simply ludicrous!
Sadly, too many people in the town where I grew up would probably agree with him. Which is the #1 reason why I would never move back.

So if your score is higher, it's meant to imply that you have a closer connection to working class white America? That's kind of a pointless assessment.
I'd post my score, but I forgot it already. It's somewhere in the range that said I was likely upper middle class but "must get out a lot," whatever the fuck that means. My ILs are mostly working class and white, they are the only reason I know about Branson since they held a family reunion there a few years back.

I've taken this before. 40. I think our Movie/TV and eating habits play the biggest role in hitting this number. We eat out a lot, and go to the movies pretty often.

i got a 47 .. due in a large part to having parents who are part of the professional poor (minister and elementary schoolteacher) that require a BA plus grad school but pay peanuts in comparison to other professions with the same educational requirements.
42–100: A first-generation middle-class person with working-class parents and average television and movie going habits. Typical: 66.
11–80: A first-generation upper-middle-class person with middle-class parents. Typical: 33.

Ugh. I didn't bother taking the quiz because I'd done it when it was posted before and had found it tedious and annoying then. It's late and I'm having a hard time putting it into words, but I had misinterpreted what it was trying to demonstrate previously -- I'm glad I understand it now.
Thank you for posting the SPLC link, @kirkette. I can't tell you how many times my eyebrows shot up reading it.
Trying for #3; FET 8/18 -- BFN. Leaving things up to chance for now... After three years, three IVFs, and two FETs, we finally have our miracle babIES!
Yeah, Charles Murray is...I'll go with problematic.
"There exists a new upper class that's completely disconnected from the average white American and American culture at large..."
The implication is that American culture is "white."
I could probably make a similar quiz for this supposed average white American that asks how many of them have taken public transportation in the last year, if any people of color attend their churches, and so on.
I felt like this quiz was the equivalent of "Small Town" & " Jack & Diane" & " Little Pink Houses" like Mellencamp working class white ex burb nostalgia.
It should have been called " Do you live in a Mellencamp song?" Which isn't real America in anyway shape or form, it's a fantasy of the past.

A mythical white culture that apparently has an epicenter in nowheresville Missouri no less.

I wondered if that was another way of asking how familiar you are with evangelicals.
I don't think it asked if you know someone with a minority religion.
I got 60 points, which is frankly shocking. Although I did grow up poor, in a rural area, so that is a big part of it. My friends are quite diverse politically and economically. I think the lack of race questions inflated my score because I've always lived whitey white-ville with my white friends.

I was thinking last night "aren't the people he considers (or his poll seems to consider) 'most American' probably some of THE MOST RACIST?"

Just re-quoting @kirkette since people still seem to be posting their scores and not reading

This drives me crazy about the "make america great again" bullshit. No dude, you don't have a monopoly on what is truly considered american.
I think we can all agree that MMM is quite a bubble. Which is a problem.
I grew up in Dallas and went to what I thought was a diverse high school but looking back it probably wasn't. I went to a pretty conservative university and now live in a smallish town outside a major metro area.
However, I don't think that means that people in my area are automatically racist vs those in big cities. Racism is everywhere across all walks of life.

It isn't even the "make America great again" nonsense. It's is perpetuated in every single part of life.
The racism in these type of communities is overt and almost if not encouraged then greeted with a silent nod of the head in acknowledgement. But SO much of American culture is targeted at THESE communities, the reach goes much farther.
Fuck - look at how the racial stereotypes are perpetuated on some of the TV shows mentioned!
Mike & Molly - for example - the black officer that is the partner of Mike is treated, throughout that show - as a juvenile. He lives with his Grandmother (that is of course shown as the strong, church going Baptist), had no parental figures in his life, is constantly chasing women, is immature....blahblah. Thats just ONE example. Look at the characters in the shows.
That is just ONE tv show. This sort of shit is everywhere.
