that's a nice piece. You didn't hear much about that in the media. I knew it was happening b/c a few people I knew got back to NJ that way.... they were hosing them off when they readched NJ in some areas- worried about chemical in the dust, etc.
This also angers me b/c it brings back memories of this sick, sick fake "nestie" who joined our local board maybe 2yrs ago and told stories about 9/11 that had us all crying... talking about how her and her brother got onto their boat and brought people back and forth, even after they heard that their other sibling was killed in the top of one of the towers.... Someone who actually KNEW this girl called her out - the rest of us were all so saddened by her sick faking - since so many of us on the local NJ board knew people who died or were in the towers - it hit too close to home.... anyway - I bet she heard stories like this and decided to make up her own for her sick pleasure.
That's how I got back to NJ. Some random boat - I think it was a charter yacht or something picked us up. A bunch of my coworkers were with me an one of them got a blackberry message that our building (#7) had collapsed.
I remember being stuck on the island for whatever reason I wasn't scared of anything else happening but I remember being afraid for other cities.
I didn't want to leave to go home to the Bronx though. I kept wanting to do something to help people. I just felt really anxious to help.
When the trains re-opened that first subway ride out was so painfully silent. Everyone just sat there and stared into space. I can't even describe the feeling.
I hate this day. I'm glad my kid is in school so I don't have to explain to her why I'm being weird. I do not look forward at all to someday having to tell her.
My boss was sitting next to me and her best friend was at Cantor Fitzgerald. Anyone who lies about something happening to them on 9/11 is an asshole, sorry.
I think this is an amazing clip in so many ways. I will be sharing it with the kids in school next week. We have been talking about heros and how perfect is this for that topic? I loved some of the things that the men said..."we all have a little hero in us" "never think i should have, make sure you do it" "this was the greatest day of my life" great lessons for the kids.
A lot of these kids lost friends and family members that day, they know that i have, they know my h was there, and i think this is a great way to show them that in the middle of that horror all these strangers came together to help each other.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
