wannabecajunmom - that helped a lot! But the whole "wrap the pieces around the bun" thing is still not working. Do you do them one section at a time? They still look very messy and not in a cute way
I usually divide it into two sections and wrap one section clockwise around the bun and the other sections counter clockwise.

I used to be a dancer, so have done buns on my hair forever without any gadgets or socks or whatever - all of which make it harder, IMO.
Ponytail, then twist until the hair turns on itself, wrap it into a bun, use HAIRPINS, not bobby pins (bobby pins suck) and aim the pins down toward your scalp. I know some people with lots of body in their hair would twist them to help hold better, or used something thick (like a pencil) to stick through the middle to hold the shape - I never had to do this because my hair is super fine.
I will say when my hair was past waist-length for awhile, a bun was a little harder, just because it was so huge it would throw off my center of gravity for my turns, so I would pin it into a figure-eight instead.
Also, if you're talking about a "messy bun" I have no frickin' clue - that's a skill I never figured out.

For DD, I do small sections. Twist them As you wrap around and Bobby pin in place. Sometimes I braid them then pin them.
Works great and stays in place all day. I put my hair in a high pony and then use the above.
Yup, ditto this. I got mine at sephora but this is really easy. Make a high pony. Then put another Rubber band at the bottom. Pull the sponge to the end of the second rubber band. Twist, spread hair and secure with Bobby pins. Spray with hair spray. Easy. And I suck at hair.
