What's the secret to the bun maker?

Because I've been trying for an hour, watched NINE YouTube videos, and it still look like a rats nest/floppy.

FWIW, I have long ish medium to fine hair.

I used to have waist length, super thick hair and no hair gadgets could rein in my hair.

My take is that some people have a knack for doing hair, and some don't.

Just like some people are good writers, and some aren't.

Well I absolutely do suck at doing my own hair. I can flat iron it. Those are my skills.

I think fine hair is really hard to work with. My advice would be a shit ton of Bobby pins and hairspray.

I have gotten pretty good at using those, that's what DD has to use for her acro meets. Can you describe your process?

with the donut, i make a ponytail and pull it through the middle. then i spread the hair all around the donut to cover it completely and stretch a hair tie around it to form the bun. then i take the ends of the hair that's sticking out and twist it around the base of the bun and pin.

does that even make sense? i promise you it's a lot easier than it sounds.

This is something I haven't tried - another hair tie after the donut. I will do this!

I do it the Mr Kate way, too (ponytail, and then roll from the tail to the scalp), but I sometimes have some gaps since my hair's not as thick as it used to be. I got a smaller donut off eBay, and it works way better!

Okay, there is one additional step we had to learn to do in order to have a tighter bun. After the ponytail, when she spreads her hair around the bun maker, I take another hair band and put it over the bun. Depending in the size of your bun and the thickness of your hair you maybe could twist it around twice. Anyway, after putting that second elastic we twist the remainder around like she does in the video and use pins.

You can always pull your hair out of that second elastic a little if you want a looser or fuller looking bun but it will still (hopefully) be more secure on your head.

Not Your Mother makes an awesome texture dry spray. It's been a game changer for me to get my fine hair styled.

Texture powder works wonders for volume too!

The sock method doesn't work so well. The buns are so loose and you can't put pins through it.

wannabe cajunmom - that helped a lot! But the whole "wrap the pieces around the bun" thing is still not working. Do you do them one section at a time? They still look very messy and not in a cute way
