Hi ladies! I'm a lurker that normally hangs out on ML, but need some book help! I hope you don't mind!
Im an elementary school librarian and am taking some online courses. For one of my classes I have to plan a book talk for seniors in high school. The theme I chose is books that have been made into movies. I'm not as familiar with YA books, so I wanted to see if I could gather some more ideas. I need to choose 5 books and thought it'd be fun if they were different genres. So far I'm thinking of using the book thief as historical fiction, the maze runner as science fiction, paper towns as mystery. I'd love to add a bio, but nothing is jumping out at me that seems geared towards high school kids. I'm also considering the outsiders as a more classic choice.
Any suggestions would be very appreciated!! Thanks!
I think The Outsiders is a great classic choice. Other YA books to movies I've enjoyed are: The Fault In Our Stars, The Humger Games, and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. A book to soon to be released movie that I'm excited about is Ready Player One.
It's not a YA book specifically, but Unbroken covers a lot of Louie Zamperini's time as a teenager before the Olympics and before his time in the war. There is a "young readers" edition that removes some of the violence in the POW camp (and the scene with the duck*), but I think it's geared towards middle school kids. The movie is PG-13, and while I haven't seen, it I know that it does NOT include the duck.
*This is an incredibly awful (re: graphic/triggering spoiler), you have been warned. Read this link if you want a less graphic spoiler.
While at the POW camp the American soldiers befriend an injured duck, name it, and it basically becomes their pet. At some point one of the Japanese guards gets mad at them and kills the duck by raping it to death.
