Where do you live again? We have metal and need to replace it. It gets hail damage very easily, and it cannot be walked upon for gutter or chimney repairs, necessitating a scaffold being built at increased expense when our chimney was damaged.
We occasionally get hail. There are a lot of houses in town with them, I haven't seen any looking like they are in poor shape.
That's the problem, you have to be up there to see the damage. The metal hides small dents very well. We didn't know until we had the chimney done and the guys said something. We got a 2nd opinion, and they said if we let it go and hail hits the same spot again, it could go through. Right now we are fighting with the company who did it over giving us an estimate in a form our insurance company will accept and praying it doesn't happen.
Ours was damaged by Hurricane Ike years ago but not so bad we needed to get it replaced immediately. After some crazy storms here earlier this year with a tornado a mile away we had to get it replaced. Every house in the neighborhood got a new roof and our adjustor tried telling us it looked like someone got up on the roof and deliberately damaged it but they would approve it. We got lucky that our next door neighbor for the past 15 years is a roofer and we got a GREAT deal. It cost us $600 out of pocket, thank God. I can't imagine having to pay for one entirely out of my own pocket but they are necessary.
My Husband wants to replace our roof with metal. You replace yours first, let me know how a couple storms go and then let me know.
I keep imagining it being a huge lightening attraction.
In my Husbands words "I love to fall asleep to the sound of rain on a metal roof". My opinion? "You work at night, it hardly rains during the day, mostly at night when I'm trying to sleep!!"

Another negative to copper gutter is that with the economy, people are stealing gutters off of house to sell. I didn't know metal roofs increased the value of houses, that surprises me . I also wouldn't have thought about not being able to walk on it for gutter/chimney repairs or that a 2nd hit by hail in the same spot could go through. It's all very interesting to know. We had to have our roof replaced a couple years ago due to hail, everyone in our neighborhood did. My parents could not get a roof on that wouldn't leak, the last roofing company put a thick rubber membrane down and then the roofing materials and it stopped all their leaks. They had a long ranch house with a t-shaped additional and where the roofs met, it would leak.
Off topic: We went out to breakfast this morning. Women at table next to us were discussing washing machines. The one woman had gotten a energy & water efficient machine. The adjitater (I can't spell it) is short. She said it just grinds their clothes to nothing. Also, someone in the family started a load of clothes, threw in some stuff she had folded that was already done. It was on the bottom of the load. Came out still folded and FILTHY DIRTY. She said the next washer she buys will have a tall adjitater. At this time I do not need to replace my washer but that was interesting to hear her experience.
