I remember the first time I saw them! I called H (I was coming home from getting our pizza) and pretty much just kept saying "this is SO COOL" over and over to him, lol. Then I turned into our driveway and a moose was standing there. It was a very Alaskan evening.
Awesome!! I would love to see that one day. Do they really move and shimmer?
Yes. Sometimes we just get what I call, very scientifically, the 'glowy kind', where it is just a greenish glow in the north. But there is also the dancing kind, where they move and change colour. It's very cool, but also sort of eerie.
The northern lights do dance and change colors. The farther north you go, the more vivid the colors, like red, etc.
I was amazed I could see them so well (the picture is way too dim) with the city lights and all. I can just imagine they were spectacular from the hillside.

There are a couple downsides to living on the prairies (like the foot of snow we've had in the last week, boooo), but the vast sky, either day or night, and general lack of city lights to block the stars is a definite bonus.
We saw some really amazing ones in Iceland last month, so jealous you can just sit on your porch
Now you have me jealous! I think I was there a week or two before you, but we had complete overcast every day and night the entire time so I didn't even bother looking!

They were extremely intense in North Pole this morning. Lots of pinks and purples. My H even called me around 05:00 to wake me up and tell me to look outside. He rarely gets to see them because he doesn't like to go outside with me to see them in the middle of the night.
Flex, are they not visible in Anchorage more often?

They are visible quite often, but it's usually between 1-4 a.m., which is NOT my MO! lol And the city lights don't help if you want to get a good viewing.
Like I said before they are more intense color-wise the farther north you go. Even in Talkeetna, which is 100 miles north from Anchorage, has more intense colors than what can be seen in Anchorage.

Mrs. Claus? Is that you? ::eyes widen::
It's no joke. All of our street poles are candy canes and our mayor is listed as Santa Claus on his birth certificate!
