Lol my dad wanted Jake and my BIL to ask him before asking us to get married. Jake did it the "right" way -- he called to make an appointment, stopped by, it was just he and my dad, and they had a nice chat. My BIL pulled my dad aside as they were packing the car to leave from a visit and just whispered to him.
I later asked my dad if he would have said no and he said of course not. So I never quite get the point of this antiquated practice (which neither my mom nor I agreed with) except to see the character of the guy. Kind of makes me wonder if I should have the boys' future SOs do the same with us lol!
So this guy has two young kids and he thinks it's an awesome idea to get engaged to a girl he's known for one season? AND give plastic farm animals to her dad as a dowry?!

I really hope your Dad has a good sense of humor.
My Dad would have laughed his ass off if DH asked ftor permission, much less with farm animals?!?!?!
This is totally judge worthy but makes me sadder/more concerned since there are kids involved and this would be a blended family. I wonder if she gets what being a step parent actually involves....
and isn't it kinda like he is asking for a dowry? That's how my dad would take it anyway. Like, I,m giving you this to remind you that you ownmea dowry for marrying your daughter. +o(
At first I thought it was funny and then I saw they've only been dating since June and he doesn't know your dad. :-| This has 'this is not going to end well' written allllll over it.
Um, No. I hope you dad has enough sense to say wait!
My dad would laugh in his face, and then probably say sure because he's a sissy.
uh, why the hell would it matter whether or not the dad said to wait? provided the woman isn't a minor, i'm pretty damn sure her dad can say "hell no" and they can still get married.
i would hope that this plan would strike your sister as "why the fuck would i marry such a tool", but not everyone is perceptive.
I was just thinking someone should step in a try to slow them down, might as well be the dad he's asking permission from. Although, if they're not going to listen to anyone anyways, why ask to begin with?
Also, aren't they a little old to be asking permission? Early 20s, cute, early 30s, not so much.
ah, i see.
my husband knew that i'd be annoyed if he asked my dad for permission, so the whole concept of caring what the dad has to say is foreign to me.

I would think the dowry is funny IF he hadn't just met your sister in june. I mean it could be funny IF you hae that kind of relationship with your future inlaws. My dad would have laughed.. .but DH and I dated for 5 years before we were married. Wow... just wow.
