This is being brought to you as a funny story. I'm still laughing about it!
We went out Saturday night to celebrate DH's 40th. Sunday morning I am taking my friend back to her car. So we're both unshowered, looking rough, blah blah blah.
Friend and I are basically the same age. I am 6'0", though, to her 5'2".
We stop at the local convienence store to get a couple diet cokes. I get mine, get in line, and I tell the cashier that it's 2 sodas. my friend walks up next to me at this point, and I'm digging my money out to pay for both of our sodas.
The cashier, w/ a huge smile, goes "You all could be sisters!" (um, ok) "instead of mother & daughter!".
:-| ^o) :-| ^o) :-| ^o)
We kind of smiled & laughed and walked out and then looked at each other and were both like "Um, what just happened? Shouldn't one of us be insulted? Or maybe complimented? Or.... what just happened?".
I assume I was the mom. I'm taller than her and I was the one paying. So - do I look young for my age? Or does she look old? Or... what?
My best friend when I was 15 was a year older than me and a FOOT shorter. People used to think she was my daughter. I still don't know how to take that since I was only a teenager and she was older than me.
My sister and I are 13 months apart. We are also totally different body types. (I am 5'2" and 120, my sister is 5'11" and more than 250. Very different personalities. - we still do have a family resemblance. No one would think mother/daughter)

I'm glad you can laugh about it.
When my mom was 40, she let her hair start to go gray. At first people complimented her on it. Then she was out with her friend (slightly older) and her daughter (who was about 17). Some guy commented how nice it was to see a grandma (my mom) out with her daughter and granddaughter! My mom got a dye job the next day

I wouldn't be offended or complimented. They took one look at your relative heights, saw you paying and thought you were the mom. Then they thought y'all looked similar in age, which you are.
That reminds me -- at a recent work-related convention, my firm took several clients (and some of their sig others) out to dinner. I just started working at the firm again, so I'm not really familiar with some of the clients. At some point during the dinner, one of them asks who I am, and my boss (13-15 years my senior) tells her I'm one of the attorneys. The client goes, "OH! I thought you were her daughter!" At first I was all pleased with myself, thinking that she thought I was in my early 20s. Then, she said something about thinking that I was my boss's THIRTEEN-YEAR OLD daughter. Booo.

A few years ago when DH and I were still dating, we went skiing with my family. As we were at the rental place filling out the paperwork for our skis, the guy says I need to get my waiver signed by my dad --- while looking and pointing at my DH. We still laugh about it.

Lol I went on a double date with my then BF and his best friend and girlfriend when I was in college. I am short, 5'2", BF looked a lot older than he was because of his facial hair, and the other couple was over 6 foot. They asked if I wanted a kids menu.
