Hi guys,
I know I don't post very regularly here, but I wanted to put this out wherever I can.
My H's best friend's fiancee was hit by a car earlier this week and is extremely hurt. She had just started a new job, and does not currently have insurance - won't be covered under BFF until they are married, which they were shooting for September of next year. They have a 3 year old and a 6 month old baby that she is still nursing, and this has been devastating. He works full time, but they do not have the funds to cover all of the medical expenses or lost income in the time that it will take her to recover.
I'm not asking for donations (but if you're so inclined, it's greatly appreciated), as I know the history of that here. But if any of you don't mind sharing the link to help spread the word, that would be great. These are the nicest people in the world and have already gone through so much, and this is just the fucking worst thing that could happen to them right now.
I know this may seem sketch coming from a non regular, but I have some of y'all on my FB and IG, and have posted there as well, so I hope that helps verify.
Oh I'm so sorry. Was it a hit and run? The driver's insurance company should cover her medical bills, and depending on the state, any lost earnings. If it was a hit and run and she carries her own insurance she may have a valid claim for uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Please have them look into this. Many prayers for a super speedy recovery.

Not a hit and run, but she wasn't crossing in a crosswalk (they live in the middle of fucking nowhere, but right off a freeway offramp) and the cop on site said that she might be at fault. I don't see how a pedestrian is ever at fault, but this is coming from the cop.

But it can take months or years to get paid out.
Of course but if she doesn't put them on notice now they may disclaim coverage. Also the hospital may bill the insurance carrier directly if they have the info.

Yeah, since this was a car accident/injury it is usually handled differently with the hospital where they will bill the driver's insurance company so they may be okay.
And even though she wasn't in the cross walk typically pedestrians have the right of way and would be surprised if the insurance company fights it.
Either way, this should not happen in America. Living and living healthy should be a fucking right not a fucking privilege. Being hit by a car should not put a family in jeopardy. I am truly sorry. I do think this will work in her favorite and hope for the best for her and her family.

Yeah but it takes sometimes months to get your medical bills. They don't hold you hostage at the hospital until you pay and in this case the hospital will be figuring it out with the car insurance company which will take time. Time is in her favor.
There should be a social worker who works with the hospital and can help with applying for any aid available.
A friend's young adult daughter was in a bad crash (pre-Obamacare) and was working a retail job without health insurance. The hospital social worker was able to set her up with medicaid and it was retroactive to cover the costs of the accident. Otherwise she was looking at tens of thousands she would never be able to pay. This also covered the aftercare (physical therapy, follow up doctors appointments) that the hospital isn't required to cover if you come into the ER.
