My SIL just defended her dissertation and is officially a Dr. I'd like to get her something as a congratulations gift. Is there anything that is particularly appropriate?
Do you expect her to receive a lot of gifts? If not, I'd probably get her something that you can have personalized with SIL, PhD or Dr. SIL, depending on which is more appropriate for her field. She worked hard for those initials, and it's really exciting to see them on something official when you graduate.
I got a few gifts when I finished mine: several bottles of wine, a gc for a massage, an Amazon gift card to buy something hobbyish now that I had time. All were super appreciated! Congrats to her!
A frame for her diploma from the university bookstore. My mom got me a nice Parker pen and had it engraved with my name and new title. I also wish I had a business card case (could be personalized).
Lurker here. The best gift I got was a nice business card case with a gift card tucked inside to help start my "professional" wardrobe. I still get compliments on the business card case nearly 10 years later! I also enjoyed anything with my name and Ph.D. next to it, tote bag, pen, leather portfolio, etc.
The diploma frame is a great idea (mine are all still sitting in their folder). The university bookstore might have other items that are good graduation gifts. Business/job related gifts are nice - like the business card case.
