Pinspire is another similar one. I don't use it though. The spam wasn't bad until the last few weeks. If you want private just don't link it to your fb and don't use your real name. People can still follow you but it won't matter.
There are websites like Diigo or Delicious that allow you to bookmark websites and tag or categorize them. You can make your lists private or you can create private groups to share.
It does not have the same visual format as Pinterest (which I realize is why most people love Pinterest), but it's pretty handy. I am a teacher and use Diigo to organize educational tools and websites- I mostly love the tagging and search features. Whenever I use it, I think it would be great for categorizing recipes, too.
I some point in the nearish future pinterest with have private boards.
This is my understanding and there is a big debate within the Pinterest community as to whether private boards should be allowed because some think it defeats the purpose of a board designed to share ideas.
I had a two-month love affair with Pinterest because I found so many spectacular recipes, but I've all but abandoned it now because of the spam, which rendered it essentially unusable for me. The last time I visited was a massive exercise in frustration, and who knows what potential viruses are among the spam.
I heard an ad this morning for a site called clipix.com - no clue if it's any good, but it mentioned being able to "clip" things off the internet and keep them for later, and that you could make boards public or private.
