Ds is three and is allergic to milk, but he keeps asking for mac and cheese. I tried to make some with vegan cheese but it was awful. I found a recipe that uses nutritional yeast but I wonder if its any good.

I've never made mac and cheese with nutritional yeast, but I have had the mac and shews from Post Punk Kitchen made for me, and that recipe uses it (http://www.isachandra.com/2011/02/mac-shews/). I liked it when a friend made it and when I had the equivalent dish at her restaurant.
Nutritional yeast is the bomb though. I put it on my kid's pasta all the time for added b-12 (vegetarians) and it just tastes and feels like parmesan.
I haven't made mac and cheese with it but I love nutritional yeast. I mostly put it on noodles with a little soy sauce, butter, and garlic salt. I also like it on tofu and popcorn.
I love it, but I don't think it tastes cheesy like other people do. And I can't see how it would melt and be creamy, but I also haven't ever tried it. I'd also make sure your kiddo likes it, because husband thinks it tastes like dirt and thinks I'm crazy for eating it.
I've tried vegan queso made with nutritional yeast. It was decidedly NOT queso, but it wasn't gag-worthy either. I think it could make a decent Mac & "cheese" if you have an open mind.

The elevated nacho cheese in the taco cleanse cookbook is a great vegan queso, sometimes i crumble TJ's soyrizo in the bottom, top it with that sauce then bake for a vegan queso fundido
What vegan cheese did you use? There are many types out there! Nutritional yeast is OK, but it won't be creamy like real Mac n cheese.
I havent found a great vegan cheese... do you have any recs? My dd isn't that picky as long as it's decent
OP we love nutritional yeast on popcorn
follow your heart mozzarella is the best on pizza, IMO i love chao from field roast in grilled cheese. kite hill is delicious, but more expensive and only available at whole foods.
I've used it along with tahini paste to make mac and cheese for DS. He never had the real thing, so I'm not sure how it compares though. I also make box mac n cheese for DS and DD and just take some noodles out and either mix it with poppyseed dressing or vegan butter and garlic salt.
He likes follow your heart mozzarella on pizza but HATES daiya (though that could be b/c he's allergic to peas and that's what makes it "spicy" to him). Found that out too late.
