YNWIT? Instead of pictures of burning buildings and crying eagles, wringing hands and moaning "why us?" a better way to remember today would be to just be a little kinder to your fellow American. Posts on fb, twitter, etc. are really just empty gestures.
if you gotta post something - just post a flag. non-graphic and still patriotic and remember-ish.
Okay, can I just direct the talk away from FB for a second? I was flipping stations on the radio while driving into work today and came across one station's Sept. 11 "tribute" that, no kidding, included hip hop, techno and dance music mixed in with audio soundbites from that day.
I listened in horror and then nearly drove off the road when they dubbed in the voicemail a firefighter left his family before he went into the towers. The song they used? "Somebody That I Used to Know."
I nearly drove off the road and I'm usually not bothered by stupid radio bits. It was just awful. Awful. Forget "empty gesture." It was just horrifying.
I love this thread so much. The disco tragedy remixes win forever and I now want to be Tragedy Whore for AE Halloween.
Ahhhh... that is the best AE ever.
And in a related topic: stop telling people what you're going to be for Halloween AE day. The surprise of seeing what people come up wit his half the fun.
Spoiler alert! I never do AE days because I suck at being snarky on someone else's behalf. So this one is up for grabs!
Also, while I'm suggesting AEs, could someone please be Lindsay Lohan and "tweet"* random shit all day long that implies you are connected to various newsworthy people and events?
And just to make this OP-related, Lindsay Lohan was not in the Twin Towers on 9/11, but she'd like to remind everyone to remember.
I think judge all the people that are 9/11 whores about the whole thing that live in the midwest, have no family or friends that were anywhere near NYC that day and make post all day long about never forgetting.
yes it was a national tragedy but get the fuck over it person who never had any personal connection to anything in NYC pre 9/11
It wasn't just New York.
Sent from my iPhone using ProBoards app --- ignore the typos!
I have at least 5 people so far posting a "where were u when u learned of 9/11" posts on FB. And yea, I swear that the only people that post that question are txtspkrs.
Why does everyone feel the need to post this stupid question every year? EVERY YEAR!
Because this somewhat like the where were you when:
(1) The Challenger blew up in the sky (2) Pearl Harbor was attacked (3) JFK was assassinated
Etc, etc, etc.
I really don't get why people take issue with this.

I guess. I just don't really see why it needs to be rehashed every single year. I feel like people just C&P their "story" everywhere once a year for no real reason.

I think relatively speaking it is still a new historical event. As time goes on (and hopefully when we can put AlQaeda in the past), I think we will see less and less focus.

I agree. Last year was the 10th anniversary. But this year, local politicians were not asked to speak - it was really just family members who held the memorial services, although I think Leon Panetta made a statement as well. I think that was intentional, to make it a little more subdued.
