I haven't been drinking much over the last few years, except beer, cider, wine and champagne at a lot of work happy hour events. I was at an event last weekend where they served limited hard liquor and I was kind of at a loss of what to order. My mind went blank and I ordered a Jack and Coke. They didn't have Jack and gave me Jim Bean instead. It tasted awful and I wondered how I drank it all the time in my 20s, lol. What's your favorite mixed drink, that you can stick to all night?
vodka tonic with lime or vodka cranberry. I normally opt for Vodka tonic unless I suspect it will be kinda crappy vodka, then I get the cranberry to hide it.
I like gin drinks - so, Gin (St. George Terroir is my favorite, but hard to find) & Tonics with lime or lemon is my most basic go-to if they don't have a more inventive menu - and typically, when I'm out I switch back and forth with sparkling water & lime / lemon.
Other favorites: - French 75 (Gin, Champagne, Lemon Juice, little simple syrup) - Gimlet (Gin with a little lime - you can get with lemon too) - Pink Lady (in places that can be trusted with the egg - Gin, Egg White, Grenadine)
I'm sorry you had to suffer through a Jim Beam cocktail *shudder*!!!!! I think the key is to figure out which of your spirits are your favorite and then start exploring from there. I also enjoy a few other spirits - vodkas, whiskeys/bourbons, scotch, but for mixing, I typically hover in the gin world.
H and I do a "house drink" each month which forces us to explore (and learn how to make) new cocktails - it's been a fun way to improve my mixed drink library!

Gin and tonic is always my safe drink. While I can make it better at home, its usually drinkable out. I love scotch, but at an open bar, the options aren't usually great.
I like amaretto sours, but with a limited bar, they usually don't have that. My default is then vodka cranberry. I never did much experimenting with liquor; I did plenty of drinking in my younger days but it was always the same stuff.
vodka gimlet, moscow mule (I've been drinking them for decades and hate that they've become so trendy), gin and tonic, or when I want something fruity, a Fantasy Island--pineapple juice, Midori, and coconut rum
I always order a whiskey sour or if they don't have sour mix I order a 7 and 7.
A whiskey sour is just whiskey, lemon juice and simple syrup (sometimes egg white), so every bar has those ingredients! I've never run across a place that won't make one for me.
My other go to for liquor is tequila and ginger ale if I want something a little sweeter.
Diet coke and Captain Morgan. If they have ginger beer then I get a moscow mule. I discovered my love of ginger beer when I went to South Africa in 2014 and was very happy when I discovered moscow mules earlier this year.
Vodka and either cranberry or orange juice. If there isn't juice available then I go for rum and Coke. If I really want to get the drinking over then it's a shot of tequila and then water for the rest of the night.

I drink wine almost exclusively. Even cheap white is okay to me. If I am at a place with no wine, I'll get a hard cider or have a dirty martini--but still missing the wine
