Any of you who live in the area OR have visited DC, would you mind recommending a nice hotel to stay in that's in downtown DC? I'm contemplating making a trip there in late January or early February.

What are you looking to do while you are in town? I really like the Kimptons. I have stayed in two or three downtown and all have been nice. I would want to stay within walking distance of some things I wanted to do. The metro is currently an immense clusterfuck and being from Alaska I assume you can deal with our winter enough to walk a few blocks. LOL

This will be my 4th trip to DC, and one trip was in late January, so I know what I'm getting into weather wise, and yes...I have scads of winter outerwear. lol
I would prefer not to take the Metro. I'd just like to be within walking distance (several blocks is perfectly fine) of the Washington Memorial, White House, and shopping.

Look at the hotel Monaco. It is in Chinatown lots of food and shopping options and close to some of the museums. It is probably a 20 minute walk to the White House and maybe 25 to the Washington monument. Closer to both is the Sofitel and Lowes Madison which I have stayed in and are really nice but I know can be $$$ (work footed the bill when I stayed).

I will definitely check out out the Kimpton, as well as your other suggestions. I stayed at the Sofitel in Chicago last month & I really liked their service.

Other good options are the Capitol Hilton (16th/K NW, walkable to the White House and Mall) or the Embassy Suites at 22d/N NW - bit longer of a walk to the WH etc but still very doable, and also walkable to Georgetown and Dupont Circle.

I've stayed at just about every Marriott brand hotel in Washington and have liked them. The JW and Metro Center are probably the most centrally located. I usually stay near China town, lots to do and walkable to most everything, Courtyard or Renissance.

We've stayed at mason and rook (which was very nice) and the Willard and I would recommend either without hesitation. The Willard was very close to a lot of landmark-type things. I can't speak to that about M&R, which was close though to an incredible brunch spot.
