R and I are going to SF this weekend to celebrate my last day of work and my birthday next week. We're traveling light - taking Amtrak and only a single tote bag for the two of us. We'd like to eat somewhere amazing and possibly off the beaten (touristy) path, but we'd like to keep the price to ~30/entree or less and would like to avoid anywhere with a dress code, whether spoken or not, as we'll both likely be wearing more casual clothes. We're staying in the financial district, so it's likely we'll be ubering to and from, but we'd like to stay within the actual city.
I love Cafe Jacqueline. It's a souffle restaurant and you should plan to spend a couple hours. The entree souffles cost about $30, but they feed two to three people. Same for the dessert souffles. You need reservations, but I don't recall having any trouble getting them on short notice.
Nopalito. It's our absolute favorite restaurant. They don't take reservations but the do allow call ahead seating. Call at 5pm and tell them when you are coming. We get the carnitas to share, totopos, 2 beers for my H and a non alcoholic drink for me for around $60.

These are great recommendations! It will be so nice to step outside our regular places for a change (we go to SF often, but always eat at pretty much the same three places, which I know is shameful.)
We always eat at Boulevard And Chaya Brasserie. Both are in the Financial District and I have never had any dress code issues. Chaya has amazing views and is right on the water. Boulevard is just up the street from Chaya with no views. There is a private cocktail lounge next door to Boulevard called Modernist. I've just walked In a few times before I realized it was private and ordered a cocktail and they have been amazing.

Prospect is the sister restaurant of Boulevard, and is also very good. It's in SoMA, near the Embarcadero.

I think Steps of Rome is closed now but if it's not go there-North Beach, bring cash, and eat the pumpkin ravioli. The front porch southern food is good too, and super duper burger on Market-Burgers/Fries/Shakes/Beer but SO good!
My favorite things I ate last time we were there were a burrito at La Taqueria and our whole meal at Mission Chinese. We got to both right when they opened and had zero wait. Both meals were really reasonable as well.
