My brother's girlfriend is from Eastern Kentucky and has a similar accent. She's the sweetest person and I feel bad asking "what's that?" all the time.
We also had a more serious incident involving a "spatter" on my jacket.
Spoiler alert: It wasn't a spatter.
I'm a little embarrassed at how long it took me to get what you were saying.
Pen rhymes with men and pin rhymes with win. To me, they don't even sound that similar.
If someone said ink pen, I immediately think of a calligraphy pen. I do know that they probably mean just a regular pen, but it's the first thing that comes to mind.

I live in St. Louis now, but I grew up about 1.5 hours south of St. Louis.
My family is from St. Louis and the general area about an hour or so south, and they all say pin for the thing you write with. Also, roof uses the wrong oo. Like cook.

I'm dying laughing at this.
ETA: In a related note, in KY (where I lived for about ten years) if someone asks for "some ass," please consider the accent, as well as context.

LOL! I should not have avoided this thread! Delightful! And I also hail from the part if the country where 'pin' and 'pen' are the same. Drives my East Coast Jersey Italian DH bonkers!

I still can't figure out what was on your jacket. ETA: Okay, got it. But I would not have without the subtle hints up there.

Thank you! I have never heard the term "ink pen." But at the beginning of this thread I guessed fountain pen. And if I were someplace where "pen" and "pin" were indistinguishable and someone handed me a pin when I asked for a pen, I would ask for a ballpoint pen. Reversed, I would ask for a brooch.
to me it's like saying tuna fish - redundant. It's just a regular pen.
How is tuna fish redundant? There are many kinds of fish!
But do you say Salmon Fish, Tilapia Fish, Catfish Fish? You also would say Albacore Tuna or Yellowfin Tuna if you were differentiating between types of tuna.
