Hello All! I'm new to this board and look forward to participating more as we are purchasing our first home next month, a townhouse north of Boston.
The home has dark brown laminate floor which we are going to keep. We have a chocolate brown sectional couch that will be going into the room. I'm trying to find a light gray area rug to hopefully brighten things up between the dark floor and couch. The accent colors are aqua, but I'd rather the rug stay neutral in gray. I also have 2 year old twins so would like something with a pattern to hopefully hide stains.
Budget for the rug is to stay under $400 so am looking at Rugs USA and Overstock. I would like something fairly soft but not shag that is going to shed everywhere. I'm having a hard time finding something between a super thin outside rug and shag carpet that has decent reviews.

Have you checked out Costco? We have a rug from there that is large and was quite affordable...though, it's more of a shag texture and not patterned, but I swear I've seen patterned rugs there.
I found Overstock to be higher than others on the Safavieh rugs that I was looking at recently...even with whatever discount they were offering at the time.
I wound up buying from Amazon, but I started out looking anywhere and everywhere (Wayfair, Rugs USA, Rugs Direct, AllModern...), and found that everyone had pretty much the same rugs...some sites just were just easier to navigate than others. After that I did searches on style names to find the best prices. I was surprised at the huge differences in price, for the exact same rug. I also found that the same rug might have a different name, but those actually came up in searches so then I just searched on both names to find the best price.

Echo recs for rugsusa and overstock. I even searched target, but their prices were a little bit higher. I used google image search to help find the same rug across the different sites - rugsusa definitely changes the names and hides the manufacturer.
My only caution would be to go more griege than grey if you have a chocolate sofa.

Just a thought, but would you consider one that was more of an organic pattern? I have a dog so I picked something like this so if there was a spot, the pattern wasn't SO fixed that I couldn't hide a spot or two. Plus, it is more greige so it easily works with both our brown leather sofa, and our gray patterned chairs.
I love our living room rug, which I ordered from Overstock.
It is shag, but there is literally zero shedding. It's a mottled grey color, with a cream pattern. It was super cheap, and we were pleasantly surprised at how nice it is. It looks great with our brown couches.
Disclaimer - we have since added plants, etc. This is when we just moved in.
I found my area rug at Home Goods, right at $200 for 8x10. It is silver and ivory, with small chocolate brown accents in it. The name is Safavieh Persian Garden. I kind of love it.
Check out Wayfair, too, as a lot of their rugs overlap with what you find on Overstock and Amazon. What I like about Wayfair's site is that a lot of customers upload photos of rugs in their actual spaces. Then you can price comparison shop with the other sites.
We had two kids under two at the time, plus a cat, and we are really, really glad we didn't pay much $$ for this rug. I will say, however, that a year-plus into owning it, it has lost its plushness. So you get what you pay for, but it's still functional and the colors look good.
Back to my main point -- customer photos! Love that Wayfair has so many of them.

This looks great and is very similar to our furniture and wood floor. I love the pops of yellow!
