8 weeks?! If you didn't already have a job, I might worry about not being able to use them as a reference or something, but really? I can't imagine it will matter for you if you never want to go back!
That is a very long time for notice. I can see DH having to give a longer than standard notice, as part of his employment contract, based on his position, and some other friends, like doctors or other key personnel, who have critical things scheduled well in advance, but a standard employee? I think anyone can see that is overkill on the part of the employer.
That's too long. I'd imagine it's outlined in your employee manual or that HR could answer that Q. "I wasn't able to give 8 weeks notice, what are the ramifications of that?" Honestly dh have 2weeks and he was treated so terribly idk if he'll ever give notice again. Congrats on the new job!
