L is getting her 6-year molars. One of them is 99% out, but there's a chunk of gum stuck on top of it. She says it doesn't really hurt, but it's all gross looking. It looks like the gum is dying? Does this seem normal? My mom thinks I'm being too breezy about it.

Xs molars take forrrrrevvvvvveer to clear the gum line completely. However it's definitely a healthy pink gum color, perhaps a bit white where the tooth hasn't cleared. If the color has changed to where you think it's dying, I'd go in and get checked out.

DS1's molars were sooooooooooo sloooooooooooow and he had a bunch of tissue still over them for a while. Unfortunately, he also got a cavity because of it. The dentist said that the tissue partially covering them made it really hard to brush all the food out. Our dentist automatically seals all 6 year molars when they come in because so many kids get cavities in them anyway, but DS1 got the cavity before they were even fully in/able to be sealed.
So, I don't think its abnormal, but worth getting checked.
I was about to say that it sounds normal but the color is what is stopping me. My daughter's 6 year molars took forever and were just plain weird looking! So big - the gums, etc. They took forever to come in. The gums stayed pink & healthy looking, though. I'd call and see what they think.
