I came home to my apartment probably about 4:30 today and when I got home I smelled gas. Now the grass had just been cut by the old ride on mower so I assumed it was that. I have been in and out of the house and I JUST realized at 10:30pm that the cat must have been walking against the stove and turned one of the knobs. My stove was HOT AS HELL. I have the fans going and I've opened windows/cranked up my AC.
My carbon monoxide detector hasn't gone off so I'm thinking that it shouldn't be an issue, but I have no damn idea. Has this happened to anyone else?? What should I be doing differently?
Are you saying your cat turned in your stove or you forgot to turn it off?
I'm saying the cat is gifted and obviously has been cooking while I'm gone. OVERNIGHT, @bigtowlittletoe. No wait, I was gone a whole 15hours. WTF, cray cray.
Daisy, I'm saying she has a habit of playing with the knobs, but it hasn't ever gotten to the point of being so playful that she moved it. I haven't used my stove in 3 days, I've been using the microwave for everything so it definitely wasn't me.

The gasoline smell from the mower is different from the smell of natural gas. But if you have a gas stove, the stovetop would only be that hot if the flame was ignited. Or do you mean the oven was hot?
Keep your windows open and circulate in fresh air.
Are you sure your bf roommate wasn't there trying to find some peace and quiet.
He moved out. The gf and him bought a place. That's not my business though, he hadn't been at the apt for weeks according to my bf. I've been staying here mostly because my schedule has been crazy along with his and it's just easier to make time to see each other before or after work.
The gas stove has been on. At what point do I worry or is it all okay since my carbon monoxide detectors have not gone off?

You don't need to worry. This never happened.
In the future open all windows and leave them open for a few hrs.

One of my friends' cats did this but they didn't catch it in time, there may have been something on or near the stove too. It started a fire in her kitchen and destroyed half of it. They had caught the cat doing it before, and usually removed the knobs when they weren't cooking but forgot this time. Cats can definitely turn a knob on a stove, don't know what to say about the rest of this though...

The entire TOP of the stove was that hot. There was no flame ignited and it looks as if it has been unignited gas leaking out.

I suspect she means the cat turned the knob operating the oven? That would explain the heat. And perhaps the cat also messed with a stovetop knob as well, leaking out some gas? If this is all the case then, yeah, you should make sure your detector is working and keep circulating air.

She's never done it to the point that it has even been able for the knob to move. It used to be pretty hard to do, but just out of sheer curiosity I'm walking past my kitchen before and I was like. UUHHHH I STILL SMELL GAS...OH SHIT...and saw the knob slightly turned.
She walks on the edge of the stove if nothing is ontop of it.
Yeah definitely not on drugs. But sure.. whatever you want to say. I frankly was just worried I was gonna have to call the FD and didn't want to blow up the damn house.
If it was hot, the oven was on. If the stove itself was hotter than what it would be with the oven on...you should probably not let your cat play with matches.
CO alarms only react to CO. Natural gas, as said, is not CO. So no alarm will sound.
I suggest leaving a crockpot cooking booklet out for the cat when you go away. It is much safer.

I knew cats were assholes, but arson is a bridge too far.

I pretty much don't understand any of this I get that a cat can randomly fiddle with a knob and turn it so sure that could cause a leak. But a natural gas leak doesn't smell like gasoline. And if the stovetop was hot that means a flame was burning so there wouldn't have been a leak in the first place. and neither of those situations would have set off a CO detector anyway.
