I have one of those emergency kits from Costco that has jumper cables, flashlight, etc. It's a small bag that I've (thankfully) never even had to open.
I also have two collapsible crates that we use to bring home items from Costco.
A blanket.
A small pack of baby wipes.
I drive an Explorer so I have a cargo area in the back. All of these items fit neatly behind the third row (except the wipes, which are in the pocket of my passenger door).

Umbrellas, US map, Chicago map, Illinois map, phone charger, diapers & wipes, napkins, dog poop bags, a variety of toys, sunscreen & off, 4 fleece blankets, ice scraper, extra dog leash, hand/foot warmers, hair brush, tooth brush, first aid kit, jumper cables, small sewing kit.
I have a little of everything except food & water in the car. Mostly I don't trust the safety of food or water left in the extreme temps of the car for any length of time.

The stuff I have in there on purpose or the stuff that randomly accumulates?
I have a zipper pouch full of first aid stuff; an umbrella and jumper cables. I usually carry a bunch of small trash bags, but recently bought a trash container that hangs off the front passenger seat and now I use the bags to line it, and that has helped a lot in terms of bits of paper, plastic wrappers and other junk.
Other than that, I have a lot of jackets/hats/sweatshirts, pencils and pens, a couple of DVDs and my phone and headset charging cables.
