Uber took the opportunity to capitalize on the Day Without Immigrants strike awhile back and they've had harassment claims (I think a bunch of people were just fired) so I'd prefer to use Lyft.
Uber employs sexist douchebags. I prefer to give my money to Lyft. Plus, I think drivers see more of the $ per ride from Lyft, but I don't know that for sure.
I prefer Lyft too for the reasons that PPs have stated. I also like that I can add a tip on the app vs remembering to have cash. I think Lyft pays their drivers better too.
We used both in San Francisco last year (before I knew about ubers CEO and other asshole behavior). Almost all drivers we used drove for both. The only difference i noticed was you could tip Lyft on the app. I liked that so without the other studf I still prefer Lyft to Uber. We were just in NYC last month and only use Lyft for that and for all the reasons mentioned above.

I've heard anecdotally from the drivers that Lyft has stricter background checks; like if you fail Lyft, Uber will still allow you to drive for them. Take that with a grain of salt though.
I like that Lyft isn't coy about whether you should tip and allows you to tip through the app.
And Uber is a goddamn mess from a business perspective; their CEO just went on leave last week so they could get their house in order. If you're not a bro, they make your life hell working there. (Google Susan Fowler's blog post if you want to read more.) This is way beyond the Trump stuff (because, in fairness, Lyft's hands aren't entirely clean either as long as Peter Thiel is an investor.)
Read the news, you old hag. Uber is shit from top to bottom. Forget it exists.
Uber/Lyft have never been a consideration since Anchorage is always in the Stone Age, and because you were born in that era, you should be able to understand and commiserate, Methuselah.

I personally haven't used either, but my SO's brother drives for both. He has told me what I quoted above--Lyft was definitely stricter about screening him before allowing him to drive for them.

Question- for those who wouldn't use uber. I assume that if there's no lyft you'd use taxi service? We have uber and not lyft. This is the first I've read of al the issues with uber management and need to decide how far I would go to 'not use them'. (I'll google and make my own decision but wondering about other poster's opinions
