My sister always wears a faux pearl strand necklace, so for Christmas I thought I'd get her a real one.
Any recommendations where to buy it? Preferably for around $100 or less, if possible. I have a few bookmarked on BlueNile.com and Overstock.com already. They don't have to be super-fancy, just something a little nicer than what she already has. I was trying to help her put it on yesterday and we had a bitch of a time with the cheap clasp.
Here's what they look like on her. I'd like to get something similar:
My STBXH (first time I typed that one out!) bought me a strand of akoya pearls from Blue Nile. The quality is fabulous and I get so many compliments on them. I know the akoya are more expensive, but I would not hesitate at all to try other pearls from Blue Nile. I think they have an excellent return policy, too.
I think you'll struggle to get a strand of real pearls for that price, or anywhere close to it. When I priced out a pearl necklace, I was looking at closer to $1000.
You may be able to do freshwater - they make some nicer looking strands, not as much luster or as symmetrical, but still pretty. I found an upscale shop for my wedding that sells strands of precious stones and helps you create your own jewelry. They had a whole room full various freshwater pearl strands, and they assisted me in putting together a necklace for my wedding. I was able to get exactly what I wanted, it was probably a quarter of the price that buying it retail would be. Do you think you might have something like that near you?
big department stores always do crazy good sales on pearls for christmas, starting black friday and continuing. i have two sets (necklace, earrings, bracelet) that cost under $100, but originally retailed between $400-500. they aren't the best of the best, but they are good quality. i've had one set for 10 years or so and they still look great - no chips or scratches, kept their color.
one set came from JCPenny, the other came from Bon-Ton. Macy's and Sears always advertise sales too.

My pearls are akoya from Blue Nile. Great quality, great customer service. Very fairly priced.
How about Amazon or Overstock? I've gotten some nice jewelry from both places... and, usually, if you can find one with good reviews, you can get a nice piece.

If you can wait, check out Macy's during Friends & Family which is usually the week after Thanksgiving although they usually do pre-sale before hand. They will have great prices, you'll be able to use a F&F coupon for 25% and it doesn't have to be on a Macy's card, you can use other credit cards.

A few years ago I got a beautiful set of pearls from Lord & Taylor on sale. It was a short necklace, earrings & bracelet. It was about $100 & also was a gift. I loved it so much that I got a set for myself too! You can look at the big department stores for sales.

I make jewelry and have had good luck ordering pearls from this site www.orientalpearls.net/ . They sell necklaces. You'll have to do a lot more hunting there than at the sites listed above but you'll pay less.

I got my pearl necklace, earrings and bracelet for my wedding from www.pearlparadise.com/. They were really good quality and I still wear them all the time.
