I totally thought this was a regular cleaning. Then I get here and they're like hey! You're finally getting a crown! I had a minor freak out. Thank god my dr knows my fear of the dentist and rx lorazepam. I will maybe barely make it through this.
I have a fear of the dentist and this would be my worst nightmare. I recently had to get 2 crowns and a root canal all within 10 days and I thought I was going to die. Lots of lorazepam for me as well.
Anyway, you've got this! It will be over before you know it, and then you will be so glad that it's over with. And that you didn't have to dread the appointment beforehand.

Thank you for the condolences and cheering me on. Like you I HATE going to the dentist. I feel better that I'm not the only one who needs meds to get through it!
OMG this would be my worst nightmare. I have been having some tooth sensitivity and the dentist put some bonding on the exposed surface where I'd brushed away some of my gum (I am a hard brush-er). But I have a 50/50 chance of this working and if it doesn't, I should look into the endodontist and a root canal
All that to say, I feel you. I hope it goes as smoothly as possible.
I totally feel for you! No way would I be agreeing to a surprise dental procedure.
The last time I was supposed to have a cavity filled the hard tissue laser was broken - that we had specifically agreed would be used - and instead of calling me to tell me the dentist assumed we would just move forward with Novocaine and the whole works. Nope! I told him that with notice (and time to take the super fancy meds that require someone to drive me) we would have moved forward, but without notice I was leaving. He was not pleased. I have since found a new dentist. I expect better communication.
Hopefully the experience went well and all is better!

I hope you're feeling good but this sounds fishy. What was the crown for? Did you have a prior root canal? Is your tooth cracked?
My dentist HATES crowns and will try tooth-sparing strategies first. Not to mention they're $$$. I just find it hard to imagine that this could be sprung on someone.

I had some issues with gums receding due to hard brushing. I switched the the sonicare toothbrush and its much better.

Ditto - I'm confused how the dentist could decide you were coming in for a crown without your knowledge?
I am here. A crown is a much longer appt than a cleaning. I am just confused on how all his came about. Was the crown previously discussed?

I'm here too. My husband is getting a crown in three weeks and he had to go in yesterday for a crown preparation. They couldn't just surprise him with the procedure (let alone allow time in their scheduling for a surprise procedure or even get a quote from the patient's insurance).

When I made the appointment 6 months ago it was for a crown. But in my head it was just a cleaning when time came. I have been needing a crown. One of old silver fillings had cracked open and it was too large of a filling to refill. This the crown. So it's my own fault I forgot this. But it's done and I'm so relieved.
I had something similar happen. I came in for a inlay. But apparently I needed a root canal then a crown. It made my anxiety flare up and I literally could not stop tearing up and sniffling. To add to the stress of it I had to drive with my mouth numb to a different dentist to get the root canal since they didn't do them at that office. Then drive back for the crown.
Lesson learned to really start taking care of my teeth. So I am now very discipline about using my oral b brush, flossing and using a rinse. I really hope to never have to experience that again.

I had two crowns (and a bridge) last month and I understand that feeling of relief!
Sorry for causing a stir. I've had some very bad experiences with overly aggressive dentists so I'm glad it's not what I was imagining!
