I've been nervous about driving my car on the long commute to work everyday, because it has over 150,000 miles on it already, and the engine is starting to go. After my two recent periods of unemployment, we have no savings to put toward even a used car for me.
Well, my dad called me last night, and said that he's getting a new car. He asked if I wanted his old Saturn Vue! It has 88,000 miles on it, but it's well-maintained, and it will get me through until I can save money for a newer used car.
That's great redheadbaker! One less thing to worry about at the moment.
I'm so annoyed at stupid people on my FB. I saw someone today say something about how "Martin Luther King was opposed to gay marriage. TAKE HIS STATUE DOWN!" and someone else said something about how democrats are trying "erase racism" (that person was responding to a breitbart article, which....ew)
I have seen a few interesting discussions about it though so I guess that's a positive? But still. ugh.
I go back to work from leave on Monday but have a verbal offer elsewhere. I am waiting for the written offer to give notice but I am going to try my darndest to get out of giving the requisite 60-days notice. After the antics they pulled while I have been out on leave, I want out immediately. I am creating talking points for negotiation that I believe would work.
I also really really want to write a scathing resignation letter and/or request an exit interview where I unload on the board and have gone over and over in my head now this would play out, but ultimately I'm gonna take the high road and just keep the letter brief and not give an exit interview. Plus, my letter would be a public document and while my new employer knows what's going on there and supports me 100%, I still don't want any kind of negative publicity for myself.
I went to a march last night held by an interfaith racial justice group and it was incredible- lots of specific calls to action. The attendance was huge.
There was ONE counter protestor. In a shirt that said "No safe spaces"
Guys, he was surrounded by 8 cops the entire time. I can't.
After an extremely lean June and a July that was merely okay, I'm on track to triple July's billable hours this month. And an old client I haven't worked with at all this year wants to meet next week about some new projects. So, feeling better about life in general and our bank account in specific.
In March, I added a third cat to my little household. Of the resident cats (an 8-year-old female and 4-year-old male), the female has just not adjusted well, to the point that she stopped moving around that house at all. I've got both on Prozac (my "middle child" is just fine) and I've been working with my vet and an animal behaviorist.
So, on Sunday, I decided that we needed reset ... the new kitty is visiting my Mother for at least a week. I get over there at least once a day, if not twice, to give him his pill and lots of cuddles. And once I get my female back to normal, or at least a little more confident, I'll bring him back and start the introduction process all over again.
On the plus side, my girl has started to move around the house again ... good steps in the right direction. And my Mother is totally enjoying having a kitty-visitor. Within 24-hours, he was exploring and sniffing everything and he's sleeping on her bed.
On the minus side, I feel like shit and a total failure as a pet parent. I miss him and can't wait until we can bring him back.

We were watching something (comedic, but I don't remember if it was Colbert or SNL summer weekend update) and there was a joke about Trump not loving a child and the punchline was Eric.
I said it would've been funnier if the punchline was Tiffany.
DH, dead serious said "Who's Tiffany?"
I explained. Blank looks. This went on for several minutes.
Guys, he has no idea that 45 has a daughter named Tiffany. Literally no idea.
This eclipse glasses shortage is madness. I just had someone in my dept come ask how many extra glasses I purchased cause he waited to long to get them. The answer is "not many".

The nature and science museum is hosting events all day Monday and mentioned in their email newsletter they had glasses for guests. Yesterday they sent out a push notification via their app that they have NO MORE GLASSES AVAILABLE! and aren't restocking them.
I've been a lurker on cep for a long time. Currently my work takes up most coherent thoughts during the day but since this is such a disorganized shit storm and all voices are needed, I'll be posting more often even if it's not much. If you see a lot of "FUCK" posts during the day, that's why.

There's a store downtown that said they were getting in a shipment. People have been lined up down the street for at least an hour, and the store handed out numbers to people in line. It's insane!

Our staff picnic is today! I'm excited and the weather is gorgeous.
I also just found out that my best friend forgot to ask me to be in his wedding in September lol. But I am, and even though all their attendants on both sides are dudes (gay wedding haha) he found a way to incorporate his lady friends and I'm happy. I wasn't really offended per se about not being in it which makes me laugh because my happy reaction is a little outsized. This is also the wedding I had to buy two dresses for because gay men apparently don't understand the nuances in women's attire when the dress code for the ceremony is cocktail/garden party attire and the reception is black tie. Eye roll. It will be fabulous though.
We caught a BABY BAT in our house last night! I'm 98% sure a dog brought it in because how?? DH caught him in a glass so we got to see it up close. Cute, in a creepy way.

It's nutty.
I ordered glasses online a while ago, from a place recommended by the AAS, and got confirmation earlier this week that they would be delivered on Saturday. Except DH and I leave early am Saturday to go to my parents' place, so we'll miss them. I spent a fruitless hour yesterday calling local places to see if any of them had _any_ glasses left, with no success.
However, I had also sent a rather pointed email to the company I ordered from about the shitty delivery timeline, and they called me up yesterday to let me know they would be overnighting some to me. I should have them in my hands today!
(and another bunch arriving on Saturday, because really, they can't stop that delivery... so I've told a buddy of mine she should come grab them, because she's having issues finding glasses, too)
I had to ask my H yesterday to explain to me why you need special glasses to look at the eclipse. Because I am dumb.
I still don't understand it.
Eyeballs aren't designed to look directly at the sun. It can damage them. To see the eclipse, as the moon makes it's progress across the sun, you need to look directly at the sun. This would damage your eyes, unless you use proper filtered glasses.
That's why the only time you can look at an eclipse without glasses is during totality - when the moon completely covers the sun. Because then you are looking at the moon and not the sun.
You can still, without glasses, make a pinhole viewer. You don't look thru it, instead you look at the shadow the pinhole produces during the eclipse, because you will see funky arcs instead of the circle one might expect for a round pinhole.

I get that. But why aren't my sunglasses good enough? (I fully realize that I'm ignorant here.)

Fun fact: It looks like she starts law school next week.

Basically, they aren't dark enough. Welders masks (usually) are dark enough. But not normal sunglasses. You'd still risk damage to your eyes.
ETA: To clarify - the glasses I purchased conform to an ISO standard, and the company from which I purchased them had them tested for compliance. So not only are they dark enough, but they have been tested to ensure they are dark enough.

This made me laugh. It's just one of those things that people don't think about much.
You're welcome for the laugh!
I was like, but if the moon covers the sun and causes total darkness, how is that harmful? H had to give me the whole explanation about the partial covering, like what audette said. In my defense, I've had a LOT on my mind this year!
H made a friend. And I'm happy for him but I feel like we do way too much with that couple now. H wants to do something with them tonight and we just saw them (briefly but that wasn't the intention, it was to spend hours with them) Saturday and I had (group) dinner with the wife last night. I just don't want to be with this couple all he time. I told him to go hang out with the couple tonight and I'd go to a weight watchers meeting with his mom.
Another thing - he texts this guy about doing things before checking with me on any plans I may have. I'm annoyed.
