SEOUL — Ten U.S. Navy sailors are missing and five have been injured after the USS John S. McCain destroyer collided with an oil tanker near Singapore early Monday morning.
This is the second time in two months that a Navy destroyer based at the 7th Fleet’s home port of Yokosuka, Japan, has been involved in a collision. Seven sailors were killed when the USS Fitzgerald collided with a tanker south of Japan in June.
The guided missile destroyer and the Liberian-flagged merchant vessel Alnic MC collided near the Strait of Malacca at 5:24 a.m. local time, the Navy’s 7th Fleet said in a statement.
And this motherfucker right here:
President Trump, returning to the White House on Sunday night, responded to reporters’ questions about the collision by saying: “That’s too bad.”
That's awful. Hopefully the missing sailors will be found safe. Sending prayers for them and their families.
"That's too bad"?!?!?! You'd be better off saying nothing, idiot. How does that phrase go, "Better to keep your moth shut and have people consider you a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt"? Something like that. Anyway, I'm sure his supporters will feel that his response to this tragedy is perfectly sufficient. They're all sick.
It sounds like something is going on with this base. My thoughts are with the family and friends of those lost.
H and I independently wondered if these were test runs of GPS hacks. Apparently we're not alone in that suspicion.
There were 4 incidents this year, but 2 seem like flukes. One a ship ran aground while anchoring. This happens surprisingly often. Another a fishing vessel ran into the navy one. No damage to my knowledge.
I'm curious to know exactly where today's collision was. Malacca straight is notoriously challenging, but I don't know if they were in it or nearby. It' a narrow busy chokepoint; additionally, it's full of pirates.
Two collisions like this are NOT normal, there's got to be something going on with that base. Inadequate training, not enough support for the operational tempo, SOMETHING. This is ridiculous.
Or, like sushi mentioned, it's being done on purpose. Both the Fitzgerald and McCain are missile defense ships, and the timing with North Korea's missile tests are making me a little tinfoil-hatty.
I did not see Trump's response the other day. While not surprising, it is every bit as infuriating as it ought to be. That the commander in chief can respond in such a flip way... Well, I don't really even know what to say.
