Having a big army and starting wars when you're not needed, and then not starting them when you need to (see Iraq, Darfur)
Shocking right winged-ness (guns, religion, death penalty, getting up in people's uteruses <-- did say utes, but getting up in someone's ute is a totally reasonable way to get a lift somewhere)
Overt patriotism (ie, nationalism, rubs us the wrong way. You can think you're the bees knees, but for god's sake, don't bloody well say it out loud)
Being too big and making so much TV content.
If people knew about the widespread popularity of denying poor people a social safety net and health care that would be another reason, but it's not common knowledge, partly because it's incomprehensible to us.
So, pretty much, big, loud, extremist and therefore scary.

I'm in Canberra but I don't see a lot of anti US sentiment. I find that here it only pops up when specific things happen.
Then we take delight in how much better we are for having things like gun control and a healthcare system. I see it more as a tall poppy thing than active dislike for the US.
I would say this wasn't your mainstream anti-american hate that usually pops up around war. The picture in this article will show it is not mainstream Australians (or mainstream anyone) that was participating. www.smh.com.au/nsw/police-gas-sydney-protesters-20120915-25yrb.html
I think both the Aussies and the UK people dont dislike the USA, but they get very annoyed when our country hangs out of the US's butt while its doing something stupid. EG, I dont dislike the US, but it annoyed the fuck outta me when the UK joined the Iraq war, along with NO ONE from Europe, just because of the "special" relationship between the US and the UK. Yes. That relationship. The one where the UK does what its told, and the US gives little in return.
