So walterismydog is doing great things right now! She left yesterday morning and made the very long drive to Texas (14 hours IIRC). She has raised almost $3500 so far, plus brought all the donations of food/vaccines, etc with her. She is currently in the Rockport/Corpus Christi area and is posting updates (she said I could update here & share FB posts). What she's doing is truly amazing.
Some C&P's:
In the meantime, it is my number one mission to help out the underdogs: the smaller shelters that are in underserved communities that were hurting for donors before the devastation. They have lost everything. They have no power. Their facilities were damaged or destroyed. I will write more on this tomorrow. But for now, please: donate to the big guys. Some great ones are Best Friends Animal Society, The Louisiana SPCA, Dumb Friends League, and Houston SPCA.
Today we start sorting, buying, and delivering.
As I mentioned in previous posts, the efforts here in the Coastal Bend will be focused on shelters and rescues that are underserved and not receiving the resources in the same capacity that the larger organizations are receiving.
I want to thank you all for trusting your funds to me. When the situation was unknown as far as how to even get supplies here, you guys came through. I am keeping detailed records of all funds received and dispersed and will be sharing that with you when the dust settles.
At this time, I ask for all funding directly to me be stopped. During the day today and over the coming days I'll be posting information about all of the shelters we are helping along with links to how you can donate directly to them.
Once again I am humbled, impressed, and full of gratitude for your hearts. Thank you. Please stay tuned this weekend to receive updates on how and where your funding is working.
I am so glad we are able to do this, you guys. These shelters have lost everything. Most don't even have power and the facilities are unable to store anything. Your cash donations are turning out to be worth even more than I imagined because we will be able to give them the funds to purchase desperately needed veterinary supplies. So far I've committed to eight different organizations. This is incredible.
I thought I'd be coming down here with a few bags of food and some blankets. Instead we are doing great things. I'm so proud of all of you. I will be posting more info on the shelters once I have made the donations.
It turns out that none of these groups really need tangible items - huge amounts of food have been donated to these communities, but money is harder to come by. Most don't even have a place to put these items. I know we are making a difference. I couldn't have done this without you. Thank you. ❤️😻🐶😻❤️
STAFF ARE LIVING IN TENTS. This shelter (Humane Society & Adoption of Rockport-Fulton) has no power. We are gathering everything we can to take out there this afternoon, including heartworm tests and flea/tick control. We are also taking gallons of water and mosquito repellent for the humans. Please consider the Humane Society and Adoption Center of Rockport-Fulton for your cash donations. I will be making a cash donation on behalf of you all today in the amount of $500. This is just ONE of the many shelters affected in this area. Let's get them up and running so that they can get back to saving lives again.
If you choose to donate directly to this shelter, will you please let me know? I'd like to know our impact. Thank you.
Edit-correction. Gathering supplies is taking a little longer than expected and getting out to rockport before they leave for the day will be impossible. We will go first thing in the morning.
*I know this is hella long but she's doing so much that I thought it was worth the read.
Thank you all for your kindness. I'm sorry I haven't been here to update in a few days. Things have been really hectic, as I'm sure you can imagine.
Funny thing is I haven't seen any actual animals yet - ha! All of the shelters are ooc right now so the pets are in foster homes. One woman I'm working with has FORTYFUCKINGTWO dogs in her care. Lordy. They're all old and/or sick, too. I'm stocking her group up big time. They'll be fostered until they're well and then she transfers them to states where the animal welfare issue isn't so out of control. This isnt unusual for her, but it has gotten worse since the storm hit. I guess she has a lot of land and these air conditioned buildings for them. The others aren't even in a place where they can take items right away, but tomorrow I'm going to visit six facilities and drop off meds.
Anyway. It's crazy here. Huge piles of debris everywhere. And I haven't even gone to the worst areas yet. :/ Sorry again for not updating sooner. I'll be back in a few days.
I'm so glad you're able to make a difference! Please don't apologize for not updating sooner, the people and animals there (as well as your rest at the end of the day) are far more important than us. We can wait! But if you see a specific need, feel free to post quickly.

TamiTaylor I'll be going to rockport humane society, Aransas county animal shelter, and ingleside animal shelter in that general area. Also port Aransas animal shelter and then another rescue group in port A.
walterismydog, you put the energizer bunny to shame!
I'm currently sprawled on the couch in the air conditioner watching my nephew be cute. Lol. After 5 it's hard to really do much - most of these areas are under some sort of curfew and I don't want to get stuck anywhere.
This is so heart-breaking and inspiring at the same time. Thank you for going to Rockport - I know they are feeling so forgotten in all of this. I wish there was more that I could do to help besides throw money at the problem. I'll call the shelter you preferred in the OP and donate tomorrow.
OG Jo , money is actually what they need the most right now! It's not throwing money, it's very helpful!
It is good to be reminded of that. I just wish there was more I could DO. Dallas is not far, but it's so far... if that makes sense. It's especially hard being an obsessive animal person and hearing about all the animals dying just because there's not enough veterinary care.
I lived through a flood in which we lost two horses. I have PTSD and this week has been really, really difficult for me. I just really.want.to.do.MORE.
OG Jo, I'm so sorry and I completely understand, I would love to be on the ground there helping like Walter but seeing it in person might make me an unusable basketcase. Working in rescue is so hard. Shelter work is hard. I volunteered for a couple of years at one of our shelters here & it was emotionally draining. I help financially now & they are one of my beneficiaries. Bless all those who have the strength & fortitude to do it.
Horses are as much part of the family as any animal. Such majestic creatures. I miss having them. I'm sorry for the loss of yours. The thought of drowning animals brings tears to my eyes. Every.single.time.
I have been campaigning against that shitbag Michael Vick. He needs to choke on a big fat donkey dick. Then electrocuted. Then rolled in barbed wire & tossed off a cliff.

Zoom is right, money is most helpful. These shelters don't even have room to store stuff. Some dont even have a shelter anymore.
I'm really sorry you are having a hard time. Today I was told that horse and livestock rescues are desperate for donations. Hay and money. You could do that in honor of your sweet horses. ❤️

Thanks ladies. I have been donating to several horse causes. One of the "barn rat" kids who has grown into a very mature young adult organized several feed stores here for people to donate to and drove an 8 horse head to head trailer full of hay and medical supplies. So some money went there.
The local barns have also organized vet care and vet supplies, so funds thrown there.

We will be coming in from NB, making stops in Goliad, and Tivoli, before we Rockport. I got in contact with an animal clinic giving away free pet food to restock their supply with these amazing donations GBCN has sent.
My MIL has arranged with a local feed store in NB for them to donated all of their damaged/ripped bags that they can't sell on the floor. Do you know of a good contact in the shelter world that can notify when they are in need?

I actually don't know of any offhand that need food. Tons of huge pet food companies have donated food and a lot of these shelters don't even have a place to put it. I guess that's a good problem to have. They all seem to need medical supplies and money to help rebuild.

Yall.
It is so fucking hot at night and like stifling humidity and the mosquitos are already Jurassic sized and out in force. By a longshot, if anyone has any connections to get a bunch of heartworm tests and hw prevention donated let me know. HW is already a nightmare in Texas. It's going to be so bad. (it's spread through mosquitos in case you aren't familiar)

I feel like I should wear a rose or something in case our paths cross tomorrow.

Also, flea and tick prevention.
What a mess.
I can ask my MIL. She is the crazy dog lady in town. And runs an animal charity here with a local vet.

Haha if you see some crazy looking sweaty girl carrying loads of veterinary supplies, it's probably me.
