But even after Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pushed back on the Democratic demands in the meeting, Trump sided with Democrats on a three-month deal that will also head off a government shutdown until mid-December.

He really, truly is incompetent at everything, including being a "Republican" president. Master negotiator, l-o-fucking-l. A cannier man with a better sense for politics would've followed Ryan's lead and tried to use it as an opportunity to make the Dems look bad and petty for "arguing about numbers" when there are AMERICANS SUFFERING IN TEXAS, OMG, HOW DARE THEY. Never mind that a hefty chunk of the congressional GOP **coughcoughTedCruzcoughcough** refused to vote for Sandy relief because of adding to the debt.
And LOL to Ivanka. She knows #45 can't be left alone with actual grown-ups without shit going sideways.

I always thought that if the sema whisper sweet nothing's in his ear they can get him to side with them on a lot of issue. That man cares about one thing, himself.
it's been said with 45 that he likes to pit his staff against each other. I think that is what happened today but with Congress. 45 doesn't care because for him it's a win. I wonder if he will do the same with Daca and work with D's. I love how Ryan said today the Dems were playing politics. You mother fucker, sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up forrreveeer. That meme is really so perfect.
Republicans wanted to raise the debt ceiling for 18 months? Dems wanted to do it for 3? Aren't republicans not supposed to want to do that? Why only 3 months? Why did Rs want 18?

I think the R's didn't want to have to deal with it again before the midterms; the D's wanted 3 months so that it comes back up in the hustle and bustle of the end of the calendar year ( <--- which is not the end of the fiscal year so I could be wrong) and the R's will scurry around like cockroaches again.
Anyone remember that Full House episode where Uncle Jesse was buying the Smash Club and they kept sending Michelle into the room with the building code info hidden in a sandwich and taped to her belly because Uncle Jesse was a moron and they're all idiots? That's what sending in Ivanka reminds me of.
There was also an instance during the NYT interview where they sent in one of Ivanka's kids, right?

The Rs wanted to do it now so that it would be out of the way by the mid-terms. They only wanted to vote on it once and they wanted to do it way in advance of the mid-terms. The Dems want to make them vote on it more than once, and they want to use it as a bargaining chip for the future. In the past they have said that it should not be a political tool, but I guess now they figure if they have this weapon, they should use it. And here, it worked.
They'll make the Rs vote on this again in December along with the budget.

That makes sense. I still don't understand why they needed Trump though- and they control both houses, so they should just get him whatever they want to sign.
This is a great summary from axioms email
How it went down, as reconstructed by Axios' Jonathan Swan: In an Oval Office meeting that went over an hour, Ivanka Trump made her case to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi for an increase in the child tax credit.
Mnuchin made a pitch for an 18-month debt-ceiling extension. Schumer, who has known Trump since the president's New York days, made his pitch. After they'd been round and round, Trump said they had a deal — and shook hands with Schumer! Be smart: This was a seminal moment for Republican congressional leaders. They left the Oval having watched the titular leader of their party side with Dems, right in front of them. They watched their carefully laid plans — using Harvey funding as leverage to push through a long-term debt ceiling extension — blow up in their faces.
The hostility that Republicans on the Hill feel towards Trump deepened. One senior GOP official, summing up the day: "He f----d us." A prominent Midwestern GOP operative emails me: "Democrats got more done in a single Oval Office visit in one afternoon than the congressional Republicans have achieved all years."

Also from axios on why it matters ( although, I'm not sure the average American knows or cares or this will even matter to them )
Soak this in: It's now possible that Trump's biggest legislative wins this year will be more spending and raising the debt cap — the exact opposite of what Tea Party Republicans came to D.C. to do.

yup.
Sadly, though, he won't use this to do actual good, to bring the country together (which, really, he's in a unique position where someone with actual brains and a heart would have done). He'll only do it for the accolades.
There's a video on WaPo I can't stream, but the headline is "Trump wanted bipartisan moment while US grapples with hurricanes." So again, the GOP is NOT going to abandon him.
this is just so whacckkadooo his obsession with coverage.
But in calls with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi Thursday morning, Trump raved about the positive news coverage it had received, according to people familiar with the calls, and he seemed very pleased with his decision.
Trump specifically mentioned TV segments praising the deal and indicated he'd been watching in a call with Schumer, two people said. And he was jovial in a call with Pelosi and agreed to send a tweet she asked for about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, these people said, while also mentioning the attention the deal had gotten. He indicated to both leaders he would be willing to work together again.
