Sorry for the gross question! DS is almost 5 months old, and wears size 3 Pampers Swaddlers. He weighs around 19 lbs, diapers are supposed to be for 16-28lbs. He's having blow outs almost daily. Typically, when that starts happening, I size up in diapers. However, this has been happening since before I sized him up to the 3s. It almost always happens when he's sitting up, either in his high chair or his FP sit me up seat. Something about that position causes him poop, and also causes it to go everywhere. Would changing diaper brands help with this? DD always wore Swaddlers, and I don't remember this problem. Thanks!
My best advice is to start feeding solids if he's ready. It really cuts down on blowouts. The brand of diaper only matters so much. Also, I found onesies made blowouts more likely than shirts.

Given the growing recommendation of WHO and AAP to not start solids before 6 mo, I don't think I would start them with a not even 5 mo old just to help with blowouts. LOL
ETA: Although if he is sitting in a highchair, I'm guessing he might already be on solids, so don't mind me. OP, DD tends to always have her blowouts when she is sitting in things as well. It's sort of a pressure thing, I think. :?
Are the blow outs happening while he is actually sitting?
DS would be ok until we laid him down to change him, and then it would run up his back. We started holding him upright to take off his dirty diapers (when possible) and that helped eliminate a lot of the mess.

Our pedi actually recommended we start him on solids already. I'm hesitant to start so early, so we're starting VERY slowly. However, our high chair is a FP space saver that straps onto a regular chair, and reclines, so most of the time he's sitting in it is just because I'm in the kitchen or the rest of us are eating and I wanted him to be able to sit with us.

Yes, while he's sitting. If we realized he's pooped and get him out fast, we can usually avoided a blow out. But when we don't realize...Ugh...
😂 as I was typing this response, he's sitting in the sit me up chair and just pooped. This is after a blow out at lunch time that prompted me to create this post 😂

Yes, please don't take my comment as any judgement for anyone who starts before 6 months, I was just commenting that it seemed like an extreme reason to start solids if you hadn't already. I know doctor's recs are still across the board on this. And I'm pretty sure we all started solids at 4 mo and we're all fine.

No worries! I was definitely very skeptical when my pedi made the recommendation. At this point, I'm giving him so little it's not going to affect our nightmare blow out situation 😂.

At this age my dd pooped in the bumbo (aka poop chair) every single time we put her in it, and it always resulted in a blow out. I just started putting a paper towel in the back of her diaper and under her shirt to catch it all.
I feel like swaddlers are shorter in the back than some other brands. DS3 sized out of size 1 swaddlers a month ago, but still fits into size 1 target brand (barely)

When M was that age we had to switch to cloth diapers. They contained the mess & we used them for about 8 months before going back to disposables. I still had to clean poop but at least it was on the diapers & not his clothes.
The only thing that could contain my DSs poops around that age were cloth diapers. Huggies might have been a bit better than pampers for him but neither were great.

Starting solids is a thing kids typically do in approximately this (4-6 mo) age range, with pedi ok. I'm not sure how one objectively distinguishes between starting solids because it's within an appropriate time zone and the kid is ready (ok), vs. starting solids because it's the same appropriate age zone, the kid is ready, and oh hey, it helps solidify diapers too ("extreme").
Our pedi said go ahead on solids at 4m. We started around 5m when she seemed ready to me. Her diapers got easier, which I found helpful. #MOTY, apparently!

But you just listed a bunch of reasons you decided to start before 6 months, none of which were diapers. As I said, I was directly commenting on starting for diapers, if they hadn't already been started for other reasons. I know plenty of people start before 6 mo & it is a decision that works well for them. And now that I know that is a benefit of solids, I look forward to it. We start them in the next week or two. LOL
I would try a different brand, maybe one that has gathers in the back. Huggies is one, but Target also has gathers.
We've been there. Contrary to popular opinion, starting solids did not help E's blowouts much. Only once we decreased breastmilk and started introducing WCM. And yes, the majority of his blowouts occurred while he was sitting in something.
Every time we have started having diaper blowouts, sizing up has helped. We haven't been going by pounds for diaper size because our long baby would have her butt crack hanging out if we waited for her to hit the next weight. She's 18.5lb now, and has been in size 3 since she was 14lb (a size 2 is usually 12-18lb). I expect her to move up to size 4 pretty soon even though she won't be within the weights yet.
Also, huggies are way better for us in terms of blowouts.
