We are flying to Orlando on Thursday for a wedding this weekend. We have 3 seats since S will be turning 2 while we are there and needs her own now, P will be a lap child. We will not need a carseat while we are there, we are taking a shuttle to the hotel that doesn't work with a seat and we aren't leaving the property or doing to Disney or renting a car or anything. We aren't sure if we should bring S's carseat just for the flight. We are leaning no and just have her sit in the seat. We don't want to have to lug it through the airport. We are planning to have her in the umbrella stroller and P in the ergo through the airport.
If you are only taking buses then no you won't need a carseat. I haven't ridden with a 2 year old on a plane in a long time, but the seats are so big for the airplane that they want you to gate check them anyway. The 2 year old would end up pushing the seat in front of them with their feet.
The title of your thread brought up another question - at what age do kids learn about 9/11? My oldest is 8 and I'm wondering if they are going to talk about it today at school. I don't have the heart yet, but I know she'll learn eventually.

From what I read on CSFTL, airplane belts are only reliable for kids 40lb and up, so yes I would bring the car seat. Of course, they also rail against lap babies since they can be projectiles, so take that with a grain of salt.

We lost loved ones so it may be different but my children know about 9/11. My twins are still little but my dd(7) knows what happened and asks questions about it. She has been up to NYC for the remembrance so we are open about it.

The advice in that group is a little extreme, lol.
My DD is still on the young side for this so I haven't used one myself, but it's an attachment to the seat/belt to adapt it to more appropriately restrain a toddler. Depending on your child's weight she might not quite be big enough for it yet, though.

s/o Preppy's question. What's the deal with carseats on shuttles? Do you need one on a charter bus? Minibus? Shuttle van?
We have a wedding in a few months and there will be a shuttle from the hotel and DS will be 1.5 years old. Wondering if we can take him on the shuttle or it's better to drive separate with a carseat.
Obviously I prefer the shuttle so I can have a few drinks, but his safety is paramount.

I took my newly turned 2yo on a flight to FL with no carseat. He used the seatbelt and mostly slept sideways with his head on my lap and his legs on my H's lap.
He had no idea he could get up and therefore never tried. It worked great. I brought a bag of dum dums and used those liberally if he got loud, lol. On the way home, the people behind us were stunned that a 2yo was in front of them, since they didn't hear a peep from him. The white noise is pretty loud and he fell asleep quickly.

Is this a bad idea? Do I really need a carseat?
What about a CARES harness? If I didn't need a car seat at my destination, I would probably go with this. Very portable, but approved for airline use only.
I have not used it, but have seen it mentioned on here before.

Yes, DH and I talked about how if you grew up in NYC or the Tristate area that you would grow up knowing about it unlike here in CA. I saw a book last week geared for children called "What Were the Twin Towers?" that looked age appropriate. I'm wondering if teacher's could chime in when they talk about it in class. I'm guessing it's part of the the 5th grade US history curriculum?

re: CARES harness - we don't fly super often, but if you are considering it, I would buy one. I rented one once for like $13 on ebay, but then I paid maybe $10 to ship it back? Then I borrowed from someone on here who was super nice and let me borrow, but I think I paid at least $14 to ship it here and back. Now I need one again... and I should have just bought one in the first place!

Leave him home with grandparents?
J/K: Do you mean a standard van that is acting as a shuttle? For that, I think you do need a carseat. I think for busses, you do not, but am not sure.

The first part isn't true in my experience. We have flown dozens of times with my daughter and son in car seats over the last 4+ years. At bag drop, they usually confirm whether we need to check it or not. Sometimes the flight attendant checks that we have installed it properly.
The second part is very true, though a RF install helps mitigate that.

Haha we would, but someone needs to carry the rings down the aisle!
Yeah--I'm not sure if it's a van or a bus. I was kind of thinking if it was a van he'd need one, but bus no. Didn't know if the type of bus makes a difference.

icedcoffee, DS has been on a shuttle several times with no carseat; we've just held him on our lap. If it's the "bus-type" (i.e. one that doesn't have seatbelts), there would be no way to install a carseat anyway. If it were a "van-type" (i.e. a regular van or minivan with seatbelts being used as a shuttle), then I'd say you'd need one.

When I last researched this the FAA recommended children less then 40 lbs be restrained with something more than just the airplane belt. So I would take a car seat.
If I'm going to wean (currently nursing at morning and night, and sending 12oz WCM to daycare), do I replace with milk during those times? I could easily do water at wake ups instead but what about at night? What type of cups do you use for bedtime? (We have miracle 360 and take n toss)
Dd2 has maybe 16 oz a day? I'm not sure how much he drinks at daycare, they just do milk in open cups at meals and snack. He still gets a bottle of maybe 4-6 oz before bed lol. I wouldn't do a cup. You could offer a soppy before you do the bedtime routine if you want.
Any tips on surviving baby's first ear infection? In the last week, DD has started daycare, popped her first 2 teeth, gotten a tiny/minor cold, and now a monster ear infection. She was completely inconsolable from 9pm-9am 😫
We have her on antibiotics and Tylenol every 4 hours. She loses her shit if she is laid down flat. I've been rocking her in the stroller in between holding her. Am I ever going to get to sleep again?

Hugs to you. She will feel better again and you will get sleep. She should feel better after 24 hours on the abx and really good at 48 hours. Can you incline her mattress or let her sleep in a rnp?
I would not bring a car seat for use only on the plane.
Ditto this. Carrying our giant Britax car seat through the airport is one of the things I hate the most about traveling. I have also taken DD on several shuttle buses without installing the car seat. We just hold her. It never occurred to me to install it for such a short trip.

We tried the inclined mattress last night, and it resulted in her sliding to the end and getting stuck on the rails I may try her car seat to see if that works..

jordylee - don't let her sleep in her car seat overnight due to positional asphyxiation concerns. Rnp or swing is the only concession I would make re: sleeping place. Ideally, the abx will kick in and you can dose her with Tylenol about 20-30 mins before bed and she'll be comfortable enough to sleep in her crib.
