If you needed to cut a hole in the side of a large heavy duty tub (think commercial-grade Rubbermaid), what tool would you use? Box cutter was a no go (although that wasn't really a shock), and the sawzall shakes the bin badly and keeps binding up. Is there a Dremel head for that? Router?

how big of a hole are you making? If you have a powerful enough drill you should be able to use a hole boring drill bit. It looks like a normal drill bit on the end, but has sharp 'wings' on the side. I think my kit goes up to 2". Bigger than that they have hole saws. They look like drill bits with giant round cuffs on them that have teeth on the end. Either of those require a pretty decent drill - I have a small light duty cordless that couldn't handle it, but my heavy duty corded drill made short work of the project.
Drill a bunch of holes around the circle's outline, and you should be able to nip through the rest with wire cutters, a hacksaw, or even scissors (if you have a sharp but junky pair).
My husband uses a serrated blade on a swiss army knife.
p.s. if you are using this as a litter box, it works great but be sure to sand/file the edges.
Yep, this is our second litter box. We have plastic door trim that we put around the hole. This is a heavier duty one than we did before (which we could cut with a box cutter).
