But when a dog is injured you people stop your lives to make sure it's ok.
I do somewhat agree with this. This is judgey, but every time someone on here posts that they donate to animal causes, I wish they would donate to 'people' causes.

Dogs are more directly connected to your average American than whales are. Since you seem to only care about things that directly affect you, this should make sense to you.
hahahaha
Thank you! I side-eyed the hell out of you, koosh, since the drought doesn't matter to you and all... geeze

But your logic is flawed - the drought is affecting thousands of people across our nation right now. The dolphin slaughter isn't directly affecting people to my knowledge (and might be helping them, if they are a source of food).

Well this turned into a bucket of nothing really. Dolphins are part of our ocean and are rather intelligent, as stated here. Once they are gone, what might be next? Anyways, thanks for different perspectives, always good to have. Agree to disagree. No worries.

I have an issue with the fact that I lived in rural Japan and still saw whale in our grocery store. That's not bycatch from scientific studies to have made it all the way there. And I have an issue with seeing whale on the Japanese menus (easy enough to read in hiragana) but not the versions English in our local sushi restaurants. Because Americans are "squeamish" so said a local site about the issue.
I'm sure I'd be sickened by watching cow slaughter, although I'd expect it's still more humane. It's not the killing that bothers me so much as the blatant disregard for international law and the buying off of other countries for their vote.
I don't know what to do about it. I do refuse to go to dolphin shows. The aquarium our rural part of Japan sickened me. About 20 sea turtles in a tank too small for even 1. And that was long before I saw the Cove. But beyond a boycott, what can I do but be angry?
Despite everyone's snark here, I also am saddened by the dolphin slaughter in Japan. But as other posters have mentioned, I guess as long as the dolphins aren't endangered/protected/overfished/etc that it isn't that much different than livestock slaughter here. I mean it seems more barbaric, but slaughter houses are pretty barbaric too.
I will say I do think there is something different about dolphins. They are really really smart (their brain has more folds than human brains). They know how to use tools, they understand at least 60 different words, and they show self awareness. Heck, heck dolphins even give birth with a dolphin midwife that will help delivery the baby dolphin if the mom runs into trouble!
I guess it is their intelligence that makes it so upsetting to me.
Although in the grand scheme of things I think that the overfishing of the edible fish is a bigger "problem"
You should really look in to research on pig intelligence. They are also very smart and emotional creatures.
I think most people don't care because they don't really know what happens. Also, everyone has a cause that is more important to them. For many people, animal rights are not a priority.
Millions of dogs & cats are killed in animal shelters every year. They're not even being killed for food, which makes it way worse, IMO.
I'm not at all saying that if you can't change everything, you shouldn't try to change anything. But there are an infinite number of injustices in the world. We can't all be passionate about everything.
I'm with Kari, I'm not a veg, but I don't eat smart animals. Nothing I couldn't watch be killed. That may be arbitrary, but honey badger don't care.
But please know that you're wasting your money donating to Sea Shepherd. They don't know what the f they're doing, and they're protecting whales that are doing well as far as numbers. I've watched Whale Wars, and of course seeing a minke whale harpooned is horrifying, but I guarantee you there are more effective whale protecting ways to use your dollar.
While you might think that, they are the ONLY ones with boats out there TRYING to stop whaling. There are other organizations against whaling, but where are they exactly? Going to the IWC meetings that are a huge sham? While I don't agree with particular things they do, I support that they are out there with a boat trying to do something, anything. Whaling used to be in the 20,000+ per year. Of course that was before it was banned internationally. Thousands are still killed per year, but it'd be nice to have barely any. They are part of the ocean ecosystem, as are dolphins. Sea Shepherd is also peacefully (because if they cause any problems whatsoever, they are thrown out of Japan) protesting and watching the dolphin slaughter 6 months out of the year. They also go to the Faroes Islands (where it really does seem like a sad lost cause cause those people really don't give a fuck about whales/dolphins if you watched that show). They are working on saving Blue Fin tuna (being overfished like a mother fucker, almost extinct) and also trying to stop Shark finning. While these all may be arbitrary to many, many people, these animals are part of our vast oceans. At some point, we will have killed everything in these oceans. Then, what happens to the oceans? In all seriousness, it's a big problem. Yes, children starving, world violence, etc are horrid and happening. But there are many organizations working towards helping them. It won't ever end, but they sure try. How many organizations are out to help animals, who feel pain just the same as we do? Sure they are dumber, don't contribute to society and taste good to some people, but still, they scream when murdered as well. If you have ever seen slaughterhouse videos, you know they are not killed "humanely". Anyways, I know most won't agree with me and that is fine. Just putting this out there.

And I agree. But thankfully, many of these are gassed. They are not hung upside down and throats slit to bleed out like many slaughterhouses in this world.

Thankfully? Gassing is not humane. It can take more than one trip through the chamber to kill some. It's not a fast death for many animals.

I guess I was expecting it to be this:Controlled atmosphere killing (CAK) or Controlled atmosphere stunning (CAS) is a method for slaughtering animals such as chickens by placing the animals in a container in which the atmosphere lacks oxygen and consists of an asphyxiant gas (one or more of argon, nitrogen or carbon dioxide), causing the animals to lose consciousness. Argon and nitrogen are important components of a gassing process which seem to cause no pain, and for this reason many consider it more humane than other methods of killing.[1][2]
